A friend recently was gifted this old Winchester 1902 Boys rifle from a 92 year old friend that had been in his family since new as he used to shoot it as a kid. Anyway, the stock is decent but the metal parts were covered with surface rust from resting in a room closet on the eastern shore for many years. I do a little gun smithing as a hobby and my buddy asked if I would like to try to re-blue it. He removed all of the rust by glass beading the parts. I buffed the parts with some very fine steel wool, prepped the metal and used Brownell’s Oxpho-Blue. After bluing and a good water rinse and dry, I lightly went back over it with the steel wool. Oiled it up and reassembled.
Btw does anyone know anything about these rifles? Through the research I have done they were made from 1902-1933. Being that this one is chambered for 22 long and shorts only, I think it may be made between 1902 and 1913. Any additional info would be greatly appreciated. Here are the pics after re-bluing.

Looks good! glass beading works great for prepping metal that's been abused or not as properly cared for as it could have. I think it (glass)even enhances stamps barrel markings etc. The oxpho blue looks like it worked pretty well.
Next time you order some metal finish from Brownell's, get a bottle of mark Lee express blue or brown to experiment with.
It will give a nice deep black /blue with the amount of polish you put into it or nearly a oil blackening with a light glass bead. Coverage for a bottle is pretty good for what it costs.

Sandblasting is really hard on the metal and will mar anything with fine detail you want to save.

Thanks guys and thanks Doco for the heads up on Lee’s express! DocM, my 80 year old buddy that now owns the rifle is a great guy and we all help each other out. He wants to replace the 2/3rds of the small bottle of Oxpho Blue, but I refused being it was my pleasure to help a friend in need. Only have about 3-4 hours in it anyway including trying to clean up the neglected bore. At first a brush would barely go through. I did get it cleaned up a bit and finished up with some non-embedding bore compound. It’s still in pretty bad shape but I at least trust that a 22 short will make it out of the barrel now. And yes we will shoot it!

Picture of the original 92 year old owner firing a 22 short from the gun he shot as skid for the first time in many years. Very cool moment!
