Recently found out about the sport, looking forward to the Damascus IWLA new shooter clinic in March!

Don't have any of the guns/gear yet, I figure it's best to try stuff out at the clinic and a match or two to try to get a feel for what I like.

The clinic is a great way to start! And folks are always advised to try out several different guns.

    Welcome!

I shot my first CAS match last Tuesday. It took some convincing for the match director to let me shoot (3-gun and CAS are completely different!), but I had the equipment and the go ahead from the president of the posse so he let me. I brought my own gear, all my bullets were lead not jacketed, so I was in. I shot the match clean with no procedurals. I even got all of my brass back. I need more practice loading my shotgun (just like my problems in 3-gun) but not bad times for a newb. I need a right hand cross draw holster, I need to black out the white triangle on my 94's rear sight, and I should be completely legal for next month.

    Thanks!
You mentioned Arundel Game & Fish, do you need to be a member there to participate in their matches?

Members pay $5; non-members pay $10. You do not need to be a member.

Third Saturday of the month. (Next weekend.) Safety briefing at 9:30.

Dress as cowboy as you are able, like jeans a long sleeved shirt and a cowboy hat.. Bring what guns you have and ammo, if possible. (12 ga and .45LC or .38) We can probably set you up with the rest.

Feel free to come and just watch. We'll get you as involved as you want to be, from picking up brass to trying one stage to shooting the entire match.

First, congratulations on an excellent first match! You shot clean! And it was your best Cowboy Action score ever!

Crossdraw holsters vs. two straight/strong side holsters is on decision you will have to make. I use two strong side holsters and don't worry about the 0.3 seconds it takes to switch hands. Makes no difference to my score.

    From the SASS Handbook:
    SIGHTS
    ALL FIREARMS
    • Sights must look like sights available during the cowboy era—bead, blade, simple post, or otherwise approved front sights (such as the XS Cowboy Express) made of materials such as steel, iron, ivory, faux ivory, brass, gold, pewter, copper, or silver are allowed.
    • Colors other than those of the materials referenced above or any “fluorescent” materials may not be applied to either front or rear sights.
    • Rear and front sights may be “blacked” painted, or plated in the colors of the previously listed materials. If blacking, paint, or plating is applied to a revolver front sight, it must cover the entire rear surface of the sight to give the appearance of a solid material.

Sounds like a good time and a chance to learn some things! I'll be in Annapolis that weekend anyway, so I guess I'll have to check it out.

It was an indoor shoot and I didn't even notice the white triangle on the rear sight until the match director said I needed to black it out. The weekend before I had a small red dot sight on it and I've barely shot it prior to putting the red dot on last summer.

ETA: I decided to go ahead and put an Uberti 1860 Henry in 44-40 on lay away yesterday. Nice, clean rifle, used, $695. Now I need brass and bullets.

Over in Handguns, someone asked about Cowboy leather. Below is a list of some of my favorite makers.

http://russthecarver.com/ Russ is in West Grove, PA.
http://jm-leather.com/index.htm Seen examples of his work; excellent.
    http://www.mountainhomeleather.com/western1.htm
http://www.tstarleather.com/holsters.htm These guys are in Berlin, MD. I've seen two of his rigs and they are excellent.
    http://www.texasjacks.com/ For all things Cimarron.

My ace-in-the-hole is a maker in Texas. He's a wealth of knowledge and can make anything you want. You will choose color, style, # of bullet loops, stamping, etc. At a very good price.

I got the crossdraw holster and shell holder today from Oklahoma Leather. The holsters that came with the two revolvers I got were from OL so what the heck. I have shells in the holder and one of the revolvers in the new holster breaking it in. I might be able to pick up the rifle next week, I just have to find ammunition for it. I couldn't find any at the gun show last weekend, I'll call around the local shops next week.
