I am a long time shooter. I started with competitive target shooting at an early age and was very successful. We (myself and the team) all gave it up to do other activities as high school progressed. I took a bunch of years off until a roommate in grad school had a pistol (AMT Hardballer 1911).
Having never fired a pistol before, I figured I had to know how to safely handle it--which of course led to going to the gun range. I was hooked on the first shot. I then spent the next few years focusing upon pistol shooting. I couldn't get good at it on my own and gun magazine articles did not help.
1999 had a decent Internet at that point and I sought help. I found a Steve Silverman of Firearms, Research & Instruction. I attended his "Level 2" course. He doubled my speed and halved my group sizes with my SIG P220 in four hours. I was hooked and have been training ever since.
I haven't neglected rifles either. I periodically attend a carbine class and have moved through AK's to AR's. I am in my 308 phase but sorta plan upon going back to AK's.
