Helloo, I'll *try* to make this short

My girlfriend lives in a neighboring state and is legally able to carry. She is a single mother and her child is very young.
We all know single-parent mothers are definitely NOT weak but they certainly are more vulnerable, especially alone with a child.
Her experience with firearms is slim to none, other than a family member of her's owning a firearm and keeping it in their home.
I'm no expert by any means but neither am I new to firearms or shooting them so I've taught her just about everything I can without taking her to the range.
I want to make sure she learns as much as possible and is comfortable holding firearms before live firing, I definitely understand the best way to learn is from experience.
I've taught her the cardinal rules of gun safety and as much as I could about my Glock 19 (I figure it would be easiest for her to shoot for the first time.)

I think she would get a lot of help from videos, on youtube or other places, of people who are experienced but I don't think she can relate to a bunch of old dudes slinging around terms foreign to her.
Does anyone know of any trained women who make videos, more specifically towards conceal carry for women or self defense for women, intended for beginners?
Just something I can send to her while we're not together but other than John Correia :lol2:

    Thanks in advanced

Sooner rather than later , she is in need of hands on , defensive shooting training . You can be the good supportive boyfriend , and make the arrangements.

I certainly don't believe that only women can teach women . I know of several excellent Instructors well versed in teaching women and newcomers , albeit most of them based down my way.

But sort of out your way , contact Mountain Top Firearms Training LLC . Owner and head instructor Paula Parsons is anything but an Old Dude . She offers a wide range of NRA classes, and USCCA classes , and also presumably personalized training .

Her website is "under development" , but primarily has Facebook for Mountain Top .

Based on your info I would not start her on your G19. Get her a .38 Revolver. I could be wrong but IMO a Glock is not the firearm for someone that has NO experience what so ever handling firearms.

Desert Eagle .50AE... preferred with pink tiger stripes.

    Just kidding.

Set her up with a shooting class, and let her try a lot of guns.

This also might be interesting to watch:

I don’t agree with this advice. Semi autos tend to have less recoil, and are “softer” to shoot because the reciprocating mass of the slide used up some energy from the recoil. .38 revolvers tend to have a very sharp recoil impulse. Stick with your original plan, or consider a .22 conversion kit. I’m retired, so I don’t teach formal classes anymore, but you can pm me, and we can arrange to meet up somewhere if you like.

Revolvers can have an advantage for women because one with an enclosed hammer can be shot from a inside purse very easily. A semi might fire one round but will likely not load another if the slide is restricted inside the purse.

    I AM a Revolver Guy .

A suitable revolver is indeed a viable option. BUT do not prejudge what any new shooter , male or female , would shoot well / prefer . Expose them to several , of different flavors , and they will either discover what they prefer , or occasionally that they are ameniable to several types.

( And revolvers are not only a crutch for people too stupid to shoot bottom feeders , many people prefer them on purpose .)

I have not done this, but you can check to see what videos any of the following have available:

    Tatiana Whitlock
    Melody Lauer
Kornered Kat (might be spelled with Cs rather than Ks).
    Tamara Keel

I just don't have time to look right now. All are women with good reputations. Melody teaches a class once/year down in VA called Armed Parent (with John Johnston) which might be especially applicable down the road. FPF Training hosts that.

She wants to carry a gun, not become a porn star. :D

My wife is adamant that a revolver is the best way to learn to shoot handguns. Her stance is there is too much going on when a pistol fires (slide, ejection, etc) and it is intimidating to a new shooter. A .38 service revolver has enough noise and recoil to let you know whats going on, but is not intimidating after the second shot and allows the new shooter to focus much more quickly.

I've met two of those I listed. They're not porn stars.

Can also see if Annette Evans has any videos. She wrote a decent dry fire book. I met her at MAG20 and she seemed squared away.

Also look up Mia Wood. She was working for a while with Mike Pannone doing women's only classes. Not sure what her online/YouTube presence is like these days.

My wife had never even held a gun before, let alone shot one, but I taught her the basics of how to shoot with my CZ P10c 9mm. She picked it up quickly after about the third mag, and now shoots about as well as I do.

Shooting and everyday carrying are two different things. IMO a striker fired handgun with no safety is not what I would have my wife carry if she has had minimal to no experience handling firearms.

I'm in Frederick and schedule my classes based on client schedule and need. If the two of you want to reach out and discuss NRA Basic Pistol or my Pistol 101, it would be a great first step.
There's plenty to learn and even more to practice if she plans to carry.

Hope you find something she's comfortable with!
