Modern ammunition is bad enough but imagine getting hit by one of those cannonballs! And medical science was pretty medieval back then too.

Thanks for the comments. These bullets and the large number of rifled barrels being used in the Civil War are a big reason why the death toll was so high.
Before then all they had were round musket balls and smooth bore barrels which are not very accurate, on the other hand the pointed and ringed "Minie" bullets invented just a few years before the Civil War can be accurate for hundreds of yards.
