If you have a shotgun zeroed for slugs using a red dot (Circle Dot) does the sight relatively work for shot (Buck and Bird) up to a certain distance (20-50 yds) or is it a completely different sight position?

I have a red dot zeroed at 25 yards w/ 7/8th ounce slugs on my RIA VR80 I use for 3-Gun. The same zero works for me using slugs and #7-#8 shot during stages with no issues.

    basically, yes.

but what has worked for me may not work for you. probably a good idea to pattern it at a range

I’d say pick a red dot and try it.

Not sure which barrel(s) you’re going to be using? The same? Different chokes?

    Different barrel?

Maybe start with slugs, and a wide choke. I actually use modified for sluggers and brenneke ko’s (but just a bead sight). With modified I am also set for hunting with most everything else. (Except turkey with extra full choke)

Start with mod, slug, and get where you're accurate, at say 0-50y, maybe a bit further.

They switch to the shot, buck or bird, of your choice and hit the pattern board. See what your pattern is doing.

Go from there to see if you still accurate or not.

Every shotgun is unique. You have to figure out what you'll shoot the most out of your shotgun and zero it for that, then try to find other loads to match. If you zero for slugs, then you'll have to try various shot loads til you find one that A) hits to the sights and B) patterns to your satisfaction.

Thanks folks, I will start with the slugs, and then try it on the pattern board with birdshot.

I've taken a couple shotgun clases with a slug zero and experienced no issues with my buck or bird being off target. YMMV, etc.

I forgot I had this question in my mind and just never got around to asking it. Thanks for asking and thanks for those who answered.
