Last time I was at that gas station, some hill jack was smoking while he was gassing up his car. As long as the Royal Farms in Gamber stays open...

We live outside Westminister a bit and when my kids were little I used to take them to the Westminister library. It started getting somewhat sketchy when my daughter was getting a snack from the vending machines and some piss stinking bum asked her for money. That came to a very fast stop. A few weeks later we walk in and the PC's are all taken by "people" cursing and causing a scene. We decide this will be the last time we visit. I spoke with one of the librarians and she was; scared to work there, was worried about going to her car after work and said so many families have stopped coming. I asked her why can't they get a security guard or Westminister police, she said they are trying but between budgets and the "rights" for everyone to use the public library, its not happened yet. The homeless shelter down the street makes all the residents leave during parts of the day and they have no where to go but the library, I'm sure they are all looking for work.
Crime is not Balt. city level, but its bad enough to avoid those areas.

There's a city cop across the street from the library daily on a Segway that ushers the vagrants away. I actually add 10 minutes to my drive home each day to people watch on Main St.

My wife has talked me into do a pub run on Wednesdays in Westminster. That's where her runners group gets together and runs for an hour then drinks at a Johansans.

Last week there were only 3 of us and we just ran around the college area. Went down a couple alley ways near some park. I'm pretty sure a couple of them were crack houses.

The sketchy areas seem to move around.
In the 90's when I was in high school walking down S. Center Street was taking your life into your own hands.
Union Street near the college was nearly as bad, but I had good friends that lived there and I worked at Monopoly Pizza on PA Ave and Union St.
There was tons of drug activity and at least one daily assault on that parking lot.

Now that I live outside the city limits I tend to avoid walking more than a block or so anywhere in Westminster.
Whoever mentioned wanting to take a shower after visiting Sheetz was exactly right.

You guys are right about the Library, too.
A couple weeks ago they had to close for a couple days because of a bed bug infestation...

I worked up there regularly up until about 18 months ago and even after. I used to fuel up after work and the "characters" hanging out at the Sheetz got me out of the habit of stopping there. Only so many times you can exercise the kind of vigilance in an environment like that so full of predators that one doesn't eventually trip you up.

I don't think there was ever a shift I worked that some angry junkie came in demanding narcotics for some bogus and recurrent/chronic pain. Some of the sketchiest people I've ever dealt with short of working in a clinic in downtown Baltimore.

So glad to be out of Westminster, Balmer.

    Next stop, somewhere in Tennessee.

Never a fan of their location. Too hard to park and get gas. Same could be said of Manchester. Too small. But, that's what they got.

Wow, its closed? I lived in 2 houses across from the Sheetz in the Mid to late 90's before I moved to the sticks in New Windsor and eventually Frederick. Yes, that area was not the most cosmopolitan area. But I don't remember it being that bad. Things must have really gone down hill. I don't go back there a whole lot so I am not sure. You all have more experience than I do these days. I have friends that still live up there and frequent Maggie's up the street. Never hear anything about it from them. The apartments/townhouses next to Maggie's, that used to be bad. I remember sitting in Maggie's watching a SWAT team assemble in the Maggie's parking lot to raid in that complex one day. And I also went to WMC and Union street was fairly bad as were sections of PA Ave in the early to Mid 90's. Walking home from "Abe Lincoln" nights at the old Johansson's "aka Down Under" was asking to brawl with somebody and we usually did. I feel bad for Westminster. I liked living there and I still have alot of friends there who are locals.

They have a security guard. He doesn't do a damn thing. The day I went there to get my library card I was accosted by a transvestite prostitute who was very persistent in soliciting me. There were also people who were obviously buying and selling drugs occupying the computers. I asked the guard why he allowed this. He wouldn't even speak to me.

    Avoid Westminster. Check.

You don't have to. Is there crime in Westminster? Yes. Do I wish the Mayor and the Chief of Police would do a better job controlling it? Sure. Do I feel in danger? No - and that would hold true even if I didn't carry a pistol.

I've walked around downtown Westminster at every conceivable time of the day and night. The trouble makers in the City are punks. When I heard that downtown Westminster was considered "ghetto" I laughed out loud, the same way I laugh out loud when I read the comments on the Carroll County Sheriff's Facebook page comparing Westminster to Baltimore. The City has issues but compared to much of the State they're still minor, for now at least.

I'm, "not far" from that location, its not as bad as you all make it sound. Yeah that place was a shit hole, but cmon. Now, maybe its because I work in Baltimore, including sandtown - Winchester, so I guess its all what you are used to.
