now ya done thrown a wrench in the mix .I found 158 gr lswc with hp 38 but not just round nose .The high road forum says its ok to use it 4.2 to 4.5 gr that its the weight of the bullet you need to be concerned with .I have 5 books 2 pretty old found it for 38 spec. not 357 . Thoughts

HP38 is the same as WW231. It is not a .357 mag powder but has seen tons used in the .38 spl. You can't get magnum velocities safely with this powder. Start at 3.5 and stop at 4.0 grains.

For you guys still using those old books, throw them away and stay safe. Powder is reformulated periodically and using old data is not safe. :nono:

HP-38 will not get you anything near top velocities in .357 , and that's why there is relatively little data for that combination . However , there is a fair amount of data for HP-38/ WW231 in .38+P , and you can safely use 38+P max as a start load in .357 cases .

That said , Hornady loads for "158 Lead " are notoriously mild , because they are using their knurled swaged bullets , and they keep it low to prevent leading .

But knowing what you have on hand , stand by for txt .

I found load data but its from a 1979 Speer it said 4.5 gr i cut it back to 4.2 but nothing seated yet , 2019 Hodgdon had a form.but wrong projectile,2012 Hornady notta nothing,1978 Sierra notta,2015 Modern Reloading Richard Lee notta. The High Roads Forum said its ok to use formula from different Projectiles.I'm at a stand still .
