So, I'm gonna build an AR. A supplier has BCM 12.5 uppers in stock at a reasonable price (a smidge under list). What's the consensus opinion? Too long for a reasonable SBR? Any opinions on BCM barrel quality?

BCM is one of the best you can get IMO. The 12.5 is the middle of the road for SBR's but it is all in what you want, I wouldn't go any longer then that, I believe the shortest you can get is a 10.5", which is what I would get. IMO

i believe the military uses 14.5" barrelled M4's so i don't think 12.5 would be too long...

i'm new to firearms but i haven't heard anything bad about anything BCM.

You *can* do as short as 7.5i nches, but it will have it's own laundry list of issues. The usual thinking of compactness vs usefullness as actual rifle centers around the 10.5-12.5 range.

I was leaning toward 10-10.5", but they seem to be in tight supply at the moment. I suppose I could just put 10 on the Form 1 and wait, but I was thinking I'd pistol the thing in the meantime.

I have a 10.5" SBR I built using an FN 10.5" 1:7 CHF barrel from Palmetto State Armory. Its a fantastic barrel right up there in quality with BCM. FN dont make no crap, lol. The 10.5" SBR is 100% reliable. Never had a single issue.

If you wanted to go with a BCM barrel, the shortest they offer is an 11.5".

Man, what's up with that unsightly gap between the rail and flash hider???? Looks terrible. I hope you don't plan to put a suppressor on that thing!

11.5" is probably the perfect SBR length!!

    16"-11.5"= 4.5" of SBR.

$200/4.5"= $45.00 Per cut Inch. Man thats a lot! :) Assuming no other fees, like a dealer transfer or another stamp or a new SBR barrel, you figure you are probably about $50 per cut inch!

Most 9mm SBRs are around 9" barrels I think.

    16"-9"= 7" of SBR

    $200/7" = $29 Per cut Inch.

So I would say a 9" barrel would be a better deal. :D Bet you never thought of it that way. ;)

I also have a 10.5 frankengun SBR and love it. It's an engage lower, LMT upper/barrel, DD MK18 Rail and BCM BCG and it runs great, never had an issue with it.

Hmmm that picture is going to make me build another 10.5" AR with geissele rail. I love my SMR MK1 and that one looks fantastic.

BAH GAWD! I agree with KINO, TERRIBLE LOOK!:sad20: If you were really cool you'd have this setup. :D

And when you're ready to go full YOLO, this is how you do it.

But in all seriousness to the OP I think you should consider the following (even though I probably don't know anything)

As your barrel gets smaller, performance will tend to decrease most definitely in bullet speed and most likely in accuracy. If using a suppressor is your plan I'd avoid a barrel around 7" because you're increasing your chances of having a baffle or end cap strike because the bullet may not be fully stabilized by the time it reaches the muzzle of the barrel. Most suppressor companies won't warranty their suppressor on barrels below 10.5 inches. Another word on the street is that the shorter the barrel means less gun powder is burned off in the barrel and is instead burned off or ignited in the suppressor. Apparently this can lead to premature erosion on suppressor internals and baffles, it seems companies are trending toward making muzzle brakes that accept their suppressors to keep the muzzle blast from blowing down the baffles and instead blow the blast to the side in the suppressors 'expansion chamber?'. Apparently quality big name suppressors can outlast rifles though.

Going with a 12'' SBR is a safe bet though, you're probably going to get the most performance like speed and probably accuracy and if you decide to use a suppressor you'll minimize the chance of a baffle/endcap strike and erosion. My rifle is a 10.5" and I'm happy with it. I had a 20" BCM upper a couple years ago, was a great shooter and wish I never got rid of it, I wouldn't hesitate to get one of their barrels. I'm starting to prefer Daniel Defense for my DI guns now but as a recreational shooter it probably doesn't make a significant difference.

Rock on man and good luck with your choice.

I have a NIB ADCOR 10.5" piston barrel for a a FA AR and am wondering if I wouldn't be better off selling it and getting an 11.5" DI barrel. I plan on suppressing it.

The Adcor setup sounds fine. The piston system will help keep the action from getting super cruddy running it suppressed, it'll still get somewhat cruddy anyways from the blow back the suppressor causes.

The rifle in my picture is an LWRCI M6, I chose a piston rifle so it would operate cleaner suppressed. That youtube video is that upper on a full auto lower literally the first time I ever took it out to shoot. I didn't have any baffle/endcap strike issues then so I'm pretty confident I won't in the future. +10.5/10.3" barrels seem to be a safe bet.
