There still remains one legal way for a Maryland resident to aquire handguns that are not directly registered with the MSP. I shall not name it, but many on the board know.

Yes. The $30 every 3 years freedom fee.

    I’m 80% sure there are two legal ways. I bet you could 3D print a 3rd way….

I am 0% certain this is the reason public high schools discontinued metal shop classes. Knowledge of material properties and basic machining skills is a dangerous thing (if you're intent on tyranting.)

Thank goodness MD has unlimited resources so that we can dedicate the time of state troopers to track down these potential criminals. I mean what could be more important, right?

Not that there are unlimited resources, just that there are no other crimes being committed - the MSP is that efficient.

When does one officially become a "resident"? I assume the date of issue of your new MD license.

I think any poor sap that moves to Maryland, intending to live here, has a set timeframe to get a MD license. 90 days I think, not sure about that. With covid last year, who knows about those time frames. The whole thing seems pretty loosey goosey.

What if you sell a pistol before you get your license. Do you still get a call asking why you didn't register it beforehand and why haven't you gotten your license yet? LOL

I am 100% certain that’s isn’t the reason. Since many high schools still have shop class. It is just an elective. It’s that you’ve only got 4 years to teach kids things and there’s a heck of a lot more to teach kids these days. Not like the human race isn’t learning and discovering more shit all the time. 30 years ago there might be one or two computer programming classes in high school. 20 years ago when I was in high school we had 3 options. My son in middle school has a couple of options. In middle school! There are a bunch of options in high school now for computer programming. Just as one example of that.

Unless they are going to extend school days or run high school an extra year or two, you’ve gotta drop something or make it optional for that stuff.

You might. You have 90 days after establishing residency to register your regulated firearms. A DL is also, if I remember correctly 90 days from establishing residency.

Establishing residency means you have a lease, purchased a residence or staying in a non-temporary manner within the confines of the state (moved in with a friend, significant other, etc. not, say a 6 month work assignment staying in housing).

That's a good question. Someone can sell a handgun to a MD resident without even intending to move here. My question is since these guns are popping up on the radar because they are being registered to their new owner then what difference would it possibly make? Why not take the time and effort to solve crimes with actual victims?

If you think about Maryland gun laws enough you will get a headache

So I can't keep my residency up in PA and rent an apartment down here without changing residency? I doubt that.

This seems very odd. There are ways to legally own a non-registered handgun in Maryland. Before 1996 (I think?) face to face sale was legal. Anyone moving to the state before 2013 wasn't required to register anything either. There are many many handguns that the state doesn't know who owns. As it should be.
Does the State Police monitor all secondary sales to determine the age of the gun beinf sold? If so that sounds like a stupid waste of resources.

Not so much the age as the source, if the firearm in a FTF transfer isn't already in their DB, then they ask questions.

Yeah this doesn't seem right. What about home built handguns? Are we supposed to register those too? What do we register, since there's no serial number?

Nope, no need to register home built firearms (yet.)

If you have residences in two states, it will depend on which state you spend over 183 days in.

And they may require you to log each day.

Friends of the family moved to DE, but kept there MD house for a while. MD went after them for state tax. They had to prove (the log above) that they spend more than half the year in DE.

I may or may not have a bunch of legally owned handguns they knpw nothing about. I transfered a Glock to my son that the state didn't know I had, never got a call? There's a bunch of handguns they don't have in their system.
