There's a whole bunch of original cannons at the Washington Navy Yard just rotting away. They should use one of those, I bet they would still work fine.

If you read the report it mentions it happened on Tuesday Sept 16th.
This year the 16th was a Wednesday.

    2014 the 16th was a Tuesday.

Manufacturing defects. They should issue a cannon recall.

Sounds like primarily quality control issues (poor weld quality does not look like full penetration, sleeve not centered and too far back, poor casting) also some design issues (sleeve cast in place vs bored and bonded other manufacturers use). I just hope this incident does not put an end to cannon firings at Ft. McHenery and elsewhere.

The fractured section of the barrel looks crystalline, like the steel was cast and chilled too quickly. This produces a brittle iron called Martensite, which is not what you want in a cannon.

They also admitted to overcharging, based on the "new'' arty manual. Would have thought they worked out the loads a couple centuries ago.

How did they drill the bores on these things 400 years ago?
