Yesterday, Delta Airlines added steps to transporting in checked luggage:

"Delta Airlines quietly implemented a new rule for passengers carrying weapons in checked baggage, airlines sources exclusively told [Miami's] NBC 6.

Luggage with weapons inside will go through an extra secure process during pick up. The baggage will go directly to a baggage service agent who is required to perform an ID check on the passenger who picks up the luggage, sources told NBC 6. The agent must then use zip ties to secure the bag.

A police officer will be at the location when the passenger picks up the baggage."

I like the extra security and the idea of perhaps now always having someone who knows what the hell they are doing handling the checking. But I can tell you right now having to wait for a local airport policeman to come every single time someone picks up a checked gun is not going to work well. That is going to take forever. I know when I used to go in to do background investigations on people at BWI and had to wait outside the secured area to get cleared by MDTA (because I was carrying) how long the wait for someone was. And that was with even perhaps some police courtesy of a speedy response thrown in. And I can only imagine what it will be like for people getting of a plane from something like Shot Show where you have a dozen reps from the same flight in line picking up their hard cases.

I knew this a month ago. Just didn't say anything. The report I read said the cops are not involved with the process. At least not at BWI.
I have a good idea, but since firearm baggage isn't to be marked, how do they know what bags have a firearm?

Does that mean we have to start packing a set of wire cutters on the outside of the bag so we can cut the zip tie later?

You do know that your checked baggage gets transferred to your outbound plane without you picking it up, right? Of course you don't.

I found this out a few weeks ago when I went to pick up my SKB rifle case at oversized baggage claim in Atlanta. Two huge zip ties wrapped around the case. I gave the agent a "Haha, WTF really?" and he just chuckled and said "yeah, sorry I just noticed they started that doing this today". I had to fish through my other checked luggage for my leatherman to cut it off. FWIW, I didnt notice any cop standing by. I really wasn't a big deal, but it was pretty stupid because I already had 4 masterlocks on the case anyway.

Now if I had a small locked pistol case inside my normal checked luggage and they zip tied that?!? I could see that pissing me off if there was something inside I needed to get to in order to get to where I was going... (rental car info, directions, hotel info, contact info, etc). I guess that's why i have a smart phone

that was my initial question/thought.

not clear on what gets zip-tied and when. you pick up your luggage in a special area (again, how is it specially routed if no one is supposed to know the luggage contains a firearm). they i.d. you and then they zip tie what - your luggage bag with the gun in a lockbox inside, or just the lockbox. assuming you have the opportunity to grab your knife or multi-tool from your luggage, you then have the ability to cut the ties immediately, so not sure how this helps prevent any recreation of the recent ft laud event.

It's "strapped" after coming off the plane while in the baggage office. Owner goes to office, shows id then leaves.

I am guessing the airline can identify the bag through the bar code on the luggage tag. That would still be in compliance with the statute.

Ummm. Delta has been checking IDs for years before releasing firearms in checked bags. Frankly I would prefer they protect my firearms from baggage thieves especially considering I sometimes travel with $20k in firearms. The zip tie is annoying and basically worthless in terms of a security measure. As always most of these measures are window dressing and do nothing to address any real issues. Not sure I understand why people have their panties in wad over this.

AS soon as folks on the wrong side of the law realize that all cases carrying firearms are ziptied... They will start targeting those ziptied cases... ( :shrug:

DUH... isn't there a "reason" that they do not "TAG" the outside of the cases containing firearms?)

And then the Airline will find another useless BS way of trying to be appear to be safer to the non educated anti gunners who scream every time they know they are within a hundred yards of a :omg:

Hmmm. If the only bags that get ziptied are ones with firearms, doesn't that violate Federal law as marking the bag externally as containing a firearm?

The statute says the carrier cannot put a label, tag or other written notice on a bag that would indicate it contains a firearm. .

A zip tie by itself indicates nothing. No more than a small TSA lock on your bag would IMO.

A zip tie does not include a tag, label or written notice per the statute so the airline followed the statute. I'm sure there are gonna be some who will argue it is. The airline can take steps to secure your bag while it is their possession.

So the obvious solution is to zip--tie ALL bags. I'm sure they will add a $10 "security" surcharge for the inconvenience. Hey, maybe that'll improve the airlines' financials!
