Hi all - I am taking my nephews who live in VA to the NRA range in Fairfax, so I will be bringing several handguns and 2 or 3 rifles (unloaded and secured in trunk, separate containers, etc.) into VA. I have done searching on the VSP site and it appears that there are no restrictions as to making stops like we have in MD - so it's completely legal to drive to homes, restaurants, etc. before and/or after the range, correct?

Thanks - any other tips regarding visiting the NRA range or firearms in VA (other than speeding :D) are appreciated too.

Yup, legal to transport as long as unloaded.
However, A handgun may be carried openly in Virginia except where prohibited by statute. Open Carry is legal in Virginia in most places with or without a Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP).
This applies to resident as well as non residents. You may want verify if there are any local statues where you'll be that prohibit open carry or transport. I provided a few helpful links.

No open carry of "assault weapons" in Fairfax County unless you have a valid concealed carry permit. Your firearms are not required to be in a trunk, and you can stop wherever you like (except federal property) as long as you're here. If the cafeteria is open, they have good food. Check out the museum while you're there, too.

Thank you! I am awaiting a new UT permit so may carry concealed when I am there but won't be open carrying.

Thanks! We are planning to make a whole day of it and will definitely check out the museum.
