Dug out the old mak 90 the other day and was admiring the fact that it a good bit nicer than my wasr 10. I recall it shoots nice too as long as I stick with fmj.

I think I paid maybe 200 bucks for it. I was surprised to see them going for upwards of 800 now. Man I thought I was going overboard buying 4 norinco SKSs for I think 125 a piece back then.

I have had the thing for over 20 years and a recent thread got me thinking about switching it over to the traditional furniture. It is a strait cut receiver but I’m guessing it has to be a specific stock for it due to the thicker stamped steel?

I’m reading up on the 922r compliance stuff so after I get that strait I’d like to make it look the way it’s supposed to.

Magpul mags are very tight since the receiver is thicker than combloc. Won't insert freely. Some fitting required.

Ironwood Designs has wood furniture for the slant cut mak90. Not cheap. Others may be available.

If you have lots of combloc magazines you have to replace the follower and baseplate.

I didn't attempt to replace the gas piston.
The trigger is the smoothest of all the variants. Don't replace it.

I have some ironwood Mak furniture but its for a slant cut. Definitely seemed a little loose sliding into a saiga receiver. Im sure you could use any ak furniture by sanding or widdling the tang area down. Ive done it before on a Vepr. 1mm vs 1.5mm doesnt take much.

I love those stocks. They remind me of the scene from Commando when Schwarzenegger was shooting up the flower garden at the mansion :gun7:

I had to use a tang screw. There are two types of stocks, a longer "nato" and shorter "warsaw". Something I read somewhere. YMMv.
