Don't forget that all sorts of other agencies/entities conduct experiments, training, tests, and other activities on those grounds. Could have been someone doing anything from testing surveillance camera technology to watching bird nests. Various LEO operations conduct K9/SAR training/tests there. You never know.

    Interesting.

Hey let the deer drink from the pond of nuclear water. Most people do not know that their is a nuclear reactor their underground as well. Hmmm were the deer lighted up at night heheheh

NCNR is just a research reactor though. Only 20MW and I don’t think they have any installed generation equipment. Just dump the waste heat. So the deer would only get a little glowy.

We had one at PSU. Smaller scale there though. One of the “big things” was that you could do engineering/science research on an actual reactor on site which is on the rare side for any university.

I think they decommissioned it awhile back now though.

Probably the same Department of Agriculture guys that do most of the herd culling in the DC Area on Federal and State land.
From the Fort Meade FAQ on deer culling -
" The US Department of Agriculture marksmen we have selected to remove the deer are professionally qualified federal government employees. These marksmen have years of experience and have conducted these operations on scores of federal and DoD installations across Maryland and Virginia. They frequently operate in sensitive areas in major cities such as Rock Creek National Park in Washington D.C., residential areas and near airports. "

They are probably furloughed right now. I volunteer as tribute. I’ve got my hunting license, I can bring my own ammo and rifle and I am already a fed. Problem solved!

PS I looked and apparently the PSU nuke is still operating. Licensed through 2029.

Most of the DOA sharp shooters that I know are biologists by trade. They specialize and actually identify the specific animals they plan to cull.

They are also sensitive to the political environment they are operating in and plan as well as any tactical team I ever worked with. They use top of the line equipment and reload so that they know exactly where their bullets will go. They test bullets to ensure they are not prone to ricochet, they test their silencers both wet and dry and document the bullet drop. Their planning, research and documentation reminds me of the people in NASA.

I know that in the past they've tried birth control (through feed and dart-applied, if I recall), and have at least once or twice had a kill-'em-dead-cull-the-herd deployment. Used some Park Service people, if memory serves. They're not going to let us private folks use lethal weapons around on the grounds of that federal facility, right up against a highway and two major suburban roads. Would be great if it was a lottery, the way they sometimes handle some state/county parks when the Bambi infestation gets too far along. Interested to hear if there's been any changes over the years. Because there are some very low-stress bucks living in that gated deer and groundhog community.

I can confirm they darted and used birth control, had a "field trip" there and witnessed it first hand while in college. I've heard of the "sharpshooters" there before but asked the question while there and no one would "confirm" I just got smirks and "next question".

They don't allow anyone to hunt it, but I'm sure some people try as there are big bucks in there.

I installed the AC in the storage building behind the reactor building years ago. Piebald deer would walk right up to our trucks.

The herd is shrinking, they darted and spayed a bunch of the doe's. What I would like to know is how they are called wild animals when the deer have ear tags like livestock.

It would be pretty much shooting fish in a barrel, the deer aren't really scared of people.

FYI not a good idea to use super sonic suppressors wet

I drove through the NIST campus a few years ago and could not believe the size of the deer. On the way out, I asked one of the security guards about whether they get to hunt; based on the look I got from him I was left with the impression they had some sort of privileges, whether official or not.
