I'm familiar with a few of the islands in the Chesapeake Bay but never considered that the kids had to take a boat to school. Photo is attributed to a Dana Insley.

Perry Hall High School has(d) an Aquatics class (late 80's). They would take a 3 day trip to Smith Island.

I think it was like the Olympics. Everyone was "hooking up".

Here in eastern NC, at my daughter's school, one of the buses needs to cross on a ferry to get to the school. If the ferry isn't running, it's about a 50 mile drive. Using the ferry, it's about 10.

I grew up there. Rode that boat many times.
When my parents went to high school, there wasn't a school boat that ran every day. They went over at the beginning of the week and stayed in Crisfield until the end of the week. There were families there that would take them in and let them stay.

    Times have certainly changed. :)

LOLz, I've been stuck there, in the winter, when bad weather opened up and all the charter captains said **** it, their staying on the Island - they weren't making a return run to the mainland in the afternoon. :party29:

I (my business account) had to pay a local the going rate - $200.00 - for a one way trip back to Crisfield. He was picking up his teenage girl who didn't have overnight lodging on the mainland.

This setup wasn't all that uncommon for high-schoolers in rural areas.
