617's make great training guns. They are the same size a the 686 with less recoil. They are listed on common penny auctions with no reserve. It is rare to see one sell cheap, the bidding frenzy will start soon enough.

I want a .22 revolver but I can't decide between a 617 or something like a LCR. Any folks have experience between the two or a third suggestion I haven't thought about?

I have a beautiful Ruger Single Six on consignment at A1Uniform. It's a great shooting 22 revolver that's only gonna increase in value because it's a Flatgate version.

If you were looking for something cheaper I would also suggest a Ruger Bearcat or GP100 in 22.

    17/617 is a K Frame. 686 is the larger L frame.

The 17/19 combo are both K frames.

Other than the sights (17s are black, 19s are orange/white outline) the only difference is the size of the holes!!

There was a story about 2 Texas lawmen on duty that were practicing with their 617s including draws from their duty holsters when they got a call for an armed robbery.

Long story short, they rolled up on the scene, make the arrests and then realized they had rolled with the 617 in their holsters instead their issued 66.

Depends what you want it for. I personally wouldn't have a use for the LCR in 22LR or 22Mag. I like 38 Special for that size revolver.

I have both a 617 (4-inch barrel, DA/SA action) with the sweetest trigger (compared to other 617s that were in the LGS when purchased - we thought that some at S&W decided to have fun with this one) and a Colt Frontier Scout (a SA action, modeled after their famous 1873 SAA, but 90% the size). The latter is similar to MPDC's Ruger Single-Six, although his is probably in nicer shape and has the cool loading gate feature. Surprising to me, many new shooters (esp 12-16 years old) have seemed to really enjoy the Colt Fronteir Scout. I personally like shooting the 617 - and can see its utility for a HD gun for an elderly shooter.

Get a large(r) frame DA or SA. Smaller-framed rimfire revolvers have much heavier triggers. I'm partial to the Single Six, especially 6" stainless versions.

The image they use is a bit deceiving due to different barrel lengths. The only exterior demensional difference in these the is the cylinder diameter.

Funny thing is the 617 and the 686 are exactly the same weight unloaded.2 pounds 7.4 ounces.

    Interesting.
