I remember years ago around here FZ was highly respected and known to be among the best. Today I saw something on a fb page that had tons of comments saying they were junk and gas keys sheering off were normal, especially for keys secured with yfs hardware. This got me concerned so I took a look at my recently purchased fz bcg. The gas key seems to have a dent in it, from a pic I took on day 1 I believe its always been there. However I do not remember if it looked chewed up around the edges. Its run flawless but only had maybe 4-600 rounds through it. All types of ammo and, same as I do with all ar’s. However none of my other ar’s look like this and they have much higher round counts. This one is a 11.5 bcm elw with spikes gas tube and block. Barrels dimpled, i leveled and checked everything 10x before I was satisfied. So I believe the tube is properly aligned. It cycles smooth as butter. Hopefully im worried over nothing, but looking for some feedback.

definitely looks like there is a misalignment somewhere or it could be that NiB coating put it out of spec.

Ship it to Clandestine and have him do the reliability service on it. He'll spec it out and will replace anything that is messed up.

I just got two done and they look great.

Wow, i thought back in the day the nib stuff was the best. My spikes nib in 2 other ar’s have been great over the years.

Think this is just the gas key or does it seem to be misalignment of the gas block/tube?

It could be just the gas tube, but I can say without having it in my hands.

Brownell sells a barrel nut alignment gauge for about $5. Itt can be used to see if the gas key is aligned properly. You have to take the gas tube out of the gun to use the gauge though.

Gas tube alignment can be checked if you strip your bolt and guts out of your carrier and drop it into the upper. It should be able to drop in under its own weight without any resistance whatsoever. if there is resistance that means that the gas tube is out of alignment or the gas key has a tolerance issue.

As 3Paul10 mentioned that particular carrier has yfs screws which are Taiwanese. Those are what people are referring to when it comes to sharing the screws. They are very weak.

This is the issues I see with NiB

Chad is right about the NiB. It really is not the coating but how the companies do it, too many take in spec BCGs and throw a NIB coating on it and throws it out of spec. Causes tolerance stacking

Great write up. The screws definitely worried me after hearing about them.

I’ll definitely try the trick you mentioned. Im hoping everything is aligned properly. It should be, but I could make a mistake too. Either way a bcm bcg will make its way in there, just dont want to chew that up if there is an issue.

Hopefully wont have to take her apart as shes going to a multigun next weekend and is zeroed.

If the gas tube isn't aligned it will start choking soon.

The flared end of the gas tube will get worn down if it's not aligned and will allow gas leakage.

Best bang for the buck right now is the AO Precision BCG from Right to Bear. $69.95

Forgot to mention this is the ar. Its a bcm rail so it shouldnt be hitting the gas tube

Tried the test the carrier slides on the tube smooth as butter under its own weight

I have switched to synth grease on engagement surfaces for NiB BCGs I have, I had one lock up on extraction, the bolt rotated and got jammed on extraction, luckily I use oversized CH and was able to muscle it out with the CH and using the "useless" FA

We went to spikes today, took it with me and had them look at it. They confirmed the gas tube is good. He said functionally its good to go but if that was theirs it would be replaced just because of how it looks.

Im going to throw it in a parts bin and replace it with a bcm. Just not sure if i want to do the ion bond. I dont feel its really any better than the phosphate. Doesnt clean easier imo lol
