99% of this forum is into real guns not expensive air guns.

That being said I literally learn something new from every thread you post and I think it's awesome!!

Exactly where I want to be
WOW, that sure got some quick responses! Well, I bought a tin in .177 for my new Gamo 1400 and Remington Thunderceptor rifles. I haven't chrony'd them yet, but when I fired the 8.5 g lr pellets, they both had that crack of a small firearm. With that much extra mass, I don't think I'll see much over 800 fps - 900 fps +/- but want to try for 100 yards with them anyway.

As I've said before, I'm not a hunter but I do like long range shooting. That being said, I am not looking for any world beating performances from a .177 cal. But both of them are pretty impressive rifles.

The EunJin's my Crosman Phantom likes better are 16.1gr ... slightly heavier. I shoot them sparingly because the experts on the airgun forums say heavy pellets are very hard on break barrel's seals. My Phantom is noisy when its wet with oil, but quiets down when it dries out.

I almost exclusively shoot regular Daisey wadcutters sitting or kneeling at a 1½" target 45 yards away. 100yards with a .177 is going to have massive drop; about the same as .22 rimfire at 300. Unless your guns are rated for pellets that heavy, don't be surprised if you blow out the seals just about the time you get it dialed in at 100.

I used to ocaisionally shoot my Phantom at the steel plates & silhouettes at my cousin's farm from 75y. I had no trouble finding them with the wadcutters.

I'm glad your rifle shoots Daisy's well but don't ever take a good look at them. They are some of the most un uniform pellets that I have used. While they don't keep up with my Crosman Premiers(my other cheap pellet), they are remarkably accurate in my Crosman 382 pump. From their bumps and bruises, they shouldn't be but they are.

It's crazy but the H&N wadcutters I use in my .22 Benjamin and the Crosman PowerShot Red Flight Penetrators I use, I can put in a half inch hole from 30 - 50 yards away and that thing's never given me a problem. But now that you're mentioning blown out seals, maybe I'll just stick to 50 as the norm.

I only have a cheap airgun and haven't measured performance but the best terminal results for small pest control are the gold colored pellets. More expensive but better results.

Yes, that is correct. However, in my short history of studying ballistics, a higher BC gives a longer and flatter trajectory, correct? That is, without going beyond the gun's recommended maximum weight "round"?

So, not counting of course the incorrect proportions(s) of the picture, but if you had a "pellet" as shaped below and within weight constraints, what would happen?

I'm sure if that would work, Pyramid, AoA or someone would be selling them by the millions. However, I happen to have something that can use that type of "pellet" very welll and will take all you have if you don't need yours. :innocent0

That's very true. I guess like the teeth on a saw blade: one saw blade can't be used for every type cutting job!
