Any opinions on local Hanover Armory builds or a Radical Firerms upper? Opticsplanet has a 300Blk from Radical for around $300. Hanover price was about same. Not sure who makes the barrel.

I hunt with a Radical 300blk upper mated to a Spike's lower. Primary Arms 2.5X scope, Sig 120gr hunting ammo. Holds .75"-1" groups at 100yd. I'm very happy with it so far.

love the versatility of 300BO, but 6.5 grendel would be better past 100yds, figure 1300FPE for full power 300 vs almost 2K for 6.5G with better ballistics

Okay, I LOVE my 18” 6.5 Grendel AR, but it is more like 1300lb-ft vs 1650lb-ft and significantly better ballistics.

At 200yds, ignoring bullet drop, the 6.5G is delivering around twice the energy as 300BO.

Really everything you listed would work just fine as would 6.8SPC. Totally up to you. I wanted something that will work well out to 300yds or so and could be used at the range out to 600 and be dandy. Never shot a deer last 80yds nor shot past 300 at the range. But just because I haven’t yet, doesn’t mean I never will.

Heck, yesterday I was eyeing some deer on the pipeline near me at 268yds lasered to the nearest one. Archery only there (and of course archery season right now!). But there have been a few spots in a few WMA and forests where I could take a 300-400yd shot if a deer decided to show up there.

I more or less know my limits. A well supported shot with a 6.5 grendel or .308, absolutely at 300 or so yards. With a 7.62x39 or 300BO...nope. Maybe 175-200 for the former and 200-250 for the later. As much to do with bullet drop as with bullet energy.

I am limited in how many guns I can own due to my wife. So a 6.5G AR was the way to go for me personally (maybe some day I can build my AR-10 and after building a .308 upper, build a 6.5CM upper for a really superb long range gun). Uppers I may not be as limited in, but if she looks in the safe and there are 5 uppers just sitting around...

    Not good.

Here is mine. Haven’t taken a deer with it yet, but I have taken it out hunting a few times.

Muzzle device was changed since this picture to a KAW linear comp from the KAK micro flash can

It’ll shoot 1MOA all day long with Hornady anything. Fusion it goes about .8MOA. Looking forward to handloading for it at some point.

The monkey wrench in your parameters is " up to 300 , but mostly under 100yds " . Two different conversations .

If the Up to 300yd is the important criteria , 6.5G is clear choice .

If " typical Maryland ( mid Atlantic generally ) hunting in the woods " , any of those , plus 6.8 , plus various wildcats .

For myself, I have a 7.62x39 for that role . Because found a deal on the Upper .

That’s what I struggle with. I’ve got a couple of rifles I could use at typical MD distances, but I keep thinking I’ll head out and that’ll be the day I get a shot presentation at 250yds or something on a big buck and I decided it would be fun to hunt with my SKS that day (or my Garand...though the Garand has the range...but the sights (for ME) would be iffy for hunting at that distance).

That’s why all I hunt with are my .308 Sako and 6.5G AR. One of thee days I’ll probably take out the SKS and take out the Garand.

I used an SKS years ago and it worked ok at an under 100yd shot. I wouldn't want to drag around and handle a Garand especially in a tree stand.

Hanover ar’s are junk! My buddy bought one and the headspace was way out. We took it back and I told them it was closing on the no go gage. They laughed and said yeah like we will listen to someone who has built a hand full of ar’s over our people. I asked him to check the headspace if front of us he declined. My buddy got the gun back with a new BCG and barrel and was told it was his ammo not the gun.

I have seen a lot of train wrecks from them. My thread about I.P.'s here building guns with a lot of problems was referring to them and a few other shops.

What is everyone's favorite non 5.56 caliber upper for the AR15?

This would mostly be used for hunting deer in the western counties of Md, so hiking up and down some hilly terrain. Longest range might be 300 yds, but probably mostly under 100. Looking at the options, looks like it may be one of these. Non suppressed. Not stockpiling ammo or mags, just for sighting in and deer.
Sticking with OP AR-15 callout, 6.5 Grendel followed by 300 blackout. Would go with others if AR-10 called out.

    450 BM

I just recently purchased a 450 Bushmaster upper to start my next years deer dropper.

I built 450 BM and extremely happy, easy and cheap bullets for handloading takes any .451 - .452 bullet from 200 to 325 gr FMJ, HP and lead cast plus share bullets between my 45 and 450BM. Extremely flat out to 200 yards and drops about 5-6 inches at 300. 250-grain leaves the muzzle at 2200 feet-per-second with a whopping 2686 foot-pounds of energy and with hornady behind this cartridge it will be around for a long time. Problem with 300BO is you take the small 223 brass trim down short below neck and put a 308 on it no room for powder, limited range and the round isnt designed for nothing more than CQB.If anything I'd like to see a 223 with .257 or .243 bullet on it not 308.
