22 mag has a different rim thickness as well. .042 vs .050 for magnum.

Recently .22WMR ammo has become merely difficult to find, rather than unobtanium.
It provides a substantial level of power for hunting ( and other uses that require power). But is expensive enough that you won't be plinking with it.
A good rule of thumb is to only shoot the caliber that is marked on the gun
