Another reason why I won't join the AMA!

I just got this e-mail from the AMA membership committee.

“The AMA must not back down from addressing gun violence. On the contrary, we must address it head on.”
    David O. Barbe, MD, MHA
    AMA Immediate Past President

Each year, more than 36,000 people are killed due to gun violence, with nearly 100 lives lost each day. People are dying in our homes, churches, schools and neighborhoods. Gun violence is a public health crisis that demands a far-reaching solution.

At the 2018 AMA Annual Meeting, the AMA House of Delegates debated more than two dozen policy proposals on gun violence and adopted new policy backing gun-violence restraining orders, tougher background checks and better data collection, among other measures.

AMA delegates adopted the following policies regarding guns:

Advocating for schools as gun-free zones
Calling for a ban on the sale of assault-type weapons, high-capacity magazines
Expanding domestic violence restraining orders to include dating partners
    Removing firearms from high-risk individuals
Supporting an increase in legal age of purchasing ammunition and firearms from 18 to 21
Opposing federal legislation permitting "concealed carry reciprocity" across state lines
Opposing requirements or incentives of teachers to carry weapons.
The time to act is now. Stand with our AMA and together the physician community can take the lead in addressing this public health threat.

Maybe they should contrast that with deaths from :

    drunk driving
    distracted driving
    opioids
    medical errors

Further, maybe they need to remove the suicide subset.

    Quacks.

Good on you Doc. Thanks for sharing.

    Every. Single. Time.

They always make out guns to be some huge killer, meanwhile they have no problem with big pharma, dui’s, people abusing drugs, people texting and driving, people falling off of ladders.

A few years back, our office manager got the “time to renew” envelopes for the 8 of us in our practice and just paid the memberships. We got our AMA cards in and were wondering how that happened. When we figured it out, all of us called, canceled, and got a refund. I will never been an AMA member, either.

Now I see why medicine is calling "the healing arts".

It's not science based at all.

Yes, preventable medical errors kill 10x more people than folks using guns (including suicides.) If you remove suicides, it's more like 40x.

Dr. Barbe, you had best get your own house in order before you go pointing that finger at other people.

No offense to our medical friends here but the AMA could save 7,000 lives a year in the US just by eliminating sloppy prescriptions.

Fixed. Almost all are electronic. Of course, it is now painfully easy to click the wrong thing.

99,000 Americans Die of Healthcare-Acquired Infections Every Year

    https://www.healthline.com/health-n...-kill-nearly-a-hundred-thousand-a-year-072713

1.7 million Americans develop hospital-acquired infections each year, and 99,000 die of HAIs annually.

Three-fourths of the infections start in places like nursing homes and doctors' offices.

The economic burden to the U.S. may be as high as $45 billion per year.

In 2012, antibiotic-resistant MRSA infections killed more Americans than emphysema, HIV/AIDS, Parkinson’s disease, and homicide combined.

And painfully easy to have that in your permanent medical record.

Is there a way to correct errant information in the EMR's?

Indeed. There is a way to correct things. Of course, there is always a log of what changed so you can’t fudge anything.
