So, I was toying with the idea of a Sig P556 SBR. Now, in MD are folding stocks on an SBR a no-no? Min length is 29", right? So, if I got a P556 and wanted to SBR it, would it have to be a fixed stock?

Nope. Just change out the FH for a brake (which, of course, makes it loud as f***.

Yep. P556 SBRs are the sexy. Sig was also even willing to fix mine when the op-rod bent for the cost of shipping - but they did require some proof it was a pre-ban SBR, so a post-ban may be a little trickier.

Get the Swiss made 553. Much better rifle.
Costs literally double the money, and the mags are insanely expensive. I also don't necessarily believe it's a better rifle... the 553s have aluminum lowers, just like the 556 guns. The 556xi also has some very useful features that 553 doesn't.

Side by side, there is no comparison between the US and Swiss offerings. Real Swiss Quality is expensive my friend. Besides, mags aren't THAT expensive. When I bought my 553, I think I paid something like $25 per for a bunch of extra magazines.

Also, in ten years, the price will seem a steal. Look at the price of the Swiss 551's nowadays.

The only reason to buy a 553 is to make it a safe queen. The second you SBR it, you're going to have to engrave it and possibly replace a bunch of parts. It is an ill-advised choice for this endeavor.

To each their own I guess.
Did you SBR your 553? Or is it just sitting in your safe being a 7lb pistol?

I think it''s insane to carve up a 553 into a form 1 SBR. It's like cutting up an original Galil into an SAR. You might think it's a good cause, but it's not.

It's not a big deal. It's not much good if you don't shoot it! The engraving can be easily hidden and any parts replaced are not permanent. That's why you buy multiples of things too. One for enjoyment and one for investment.

Just going to throw this out there.

There is no real need to SBR your "pistol" anymore. Lots of brace options on the the market now.

    Unless laws change, of course...

What AK pistol is that and did it come with the brace or did you add it? I’ve been looking at MD legal AK pistols off and on but most of the ones I’m finding local don’t come with braces.

It is an AK47 style M92 pistol with a Custom Smith MFG modified Sig Sauer MCX stock (Direct link https://customsmithmfg.com/shop?olsPage=products/sig-folding-tailhook-host-tailhook-sold-separately) and Gear Head Works Mod 1 brace. The furniture is Midwest Industries and Magpul. Holosun HS503C sight.

I like to keep all of the modifications to my firearms to be completely reversible in case I decide to sell it or the laws change. With that in mind, the Sig MCX stock/brace uses a three of four slot picatinny rail mounted vertically as an attachment mechanism. I got the adapter that fits under the grip and provides a flat plate to mount the rail from US Machinegun dot com. I would suggest buying the flat plate adapter and drilling your own holes and installing a rail yourself. I bought the one that had a rail already installed. The rail was made of plastic and was attached at a slight angle (not quite aligned straight up and down). It was intended to attached a sling or something. I would just make one yourself. It involved fair amount of metal work and some fabrication just because I ended up making mine from a piece of raw stock un-drilled picatinny section of rail. It would have been easier if I had started with a blank adapter plate and drilled it myself. Because I bought the one with the plastic rail already installed, I had to cut my new aluminium rail to match the holes that were already there. I had it thought out and completed in a couple of hours one afternoon.

Buy this one and drill your own holes for the picatinny rail installation.

    Don't buy this one...

Of course, there is nothing wrong with just installing a picatinny rail directly to the rear of your AK receiver. I did not want to do this as it is much harder to reverse.

    Also,

For the Sig P556 if anyone is curious, and maybe a different option for the AK...

You could get a M4 adapter for the AK
    http://www.usmachinegun.com/proddetail.php?prod=PAP-SAAR

    and use the KNS rail.

Let me know if you have any other questions. hopefully this will save someone a little bit of trouble.
