As most of us know, there are rifles which one may not purchase but which one may own if possessed before a certain date.

My question is, how does the matter of sending such a rifle to a smith for service work with regards to the law / paperwork?

I know that federal law permits the shipping of a firearm to and from the manufacturer or a licensed gunsmith for repair. But does Maryland law restrict this, especially with regard to items no longer legal for purchase.

In other words, can a gunsmith simply send it back to a Maryland resident or does it need to go through an FFL and does crossing state lines affect this in Maryland Law.

Not 100% sure but I believe there’s a carve out for that. Generally you can have rifles sent back to you without an FFL I believe.
I’ve had handguns mailed back to me from a manufacturer for warranty work. No FFLs involved

    Shouldn't be a problem.

I have been talking to the atf in regards to an FFL for gunsmithing (Wood Repairs/finishing) seems easy and the field agent they put me in touch with said my biggest difficulty will be getting approval from planning and zoning .... Anne Arundel County. Wish I tried this before Pittman got elected.

Anne Arundel has always had an issue with in home FFL's. There were a few doing this some years ago but they didn't handle handguns so the State never really new they were there. PG county had no problem with it back in the seventies and eighties.

That Mauser may be a REMO or GEHA conversion of a WWI G98. On many of these conversions, the rear lug is all that locks the bolt.

I'll bet that batch is from when a MDS member had a boating accident.

Not an expert by any means, but wouldn't someone engaged in business as a gunsmith most likely already possess an FFL? Particularly a manufacturer.

Two different conversations in this thread :

    1. Gun Owner sending his personally owned Grandfathered EBR to a Gunsmith & back .
    2. Md Resident starting up a Gunsmithing Business ( possibly with a specialization in repair/ maintain/ customize of Grandfathered EBR ) .
