Please help me make sure I'm right.....I have an AR I purchased, I can't make it an AR pistol. Am I correct that the order is AR pistol can become a rifle and back but a rifle can not become a pistol without getting in a shit load of trouble.

Yes. Once a rifle, always a rifle. Pistol to rifle and back is okay.

If the first thing the lower was in life was a rifle, it can never ever be a pistol.

Hmmm. So if someone buys a stripped lower, then screw on a buffer and pistol grip, the lower is now officially a pistol? Then it can have a rifle stock added, and subsequently removed to make it a pistol again with no legal issues? Who woulda thought changing the order of steps in a build could have legal repercussions?

You would have to take a virgin lower, configure it with pistol buffer tube, AND a sub 16in bbl to change its legal DNA .

Of course you could start with rifle , file a Form 1, pay $200, wait a long time, and eventually change it into an AOW that physically resembles an AR Pistol , and you could then also use a vertical foregrip .

but need to add that put a stock on an AR pistol is a no-no. That would make it an SBR. Would need to put a rifle upper on it as well. CAn go back and forth between pistol and rifle as long as what the others said about pistol/other first.

Edit. Was typing my post when Bigfoot44 did his. Curses. Foiled again. :)

Don’t have to wait that long for a Form 1
