The only prep item you need as of now is more ammo. Can't get enough of it (if you can even find it, that is).

You be new around these parts.

Not a bunch of folks here ain’t been to that rodeo and know all those bulls by first name basis.

Ya cannot eat or wipe with ammo. You may be able to trade or you may plan to go all pirate on your neighbors butt, that rarely goes as planned.

I ran by Sams Club today to grab something for work and checked the TP and paper towels just because.
    Nada.

Not another run on shit tickets...

Yep. Watched two wimmens climb to the top of the pallet rack in the TP aisle (Mt. Airy Walmart) to grab the last box of $BRAND toilet paper. Once down, they tore into it like hungry hyenas. The bottom two shelves in the TP area were bare.

A staffer was there, just patiently waiting for the dust to settle. She said it's been "weird" since about noon.

I bought some canned goods, a replacement tire for the wheelbarrow, and a half-liter of isopropyl alcohol. Yeah, I know, they had rubbing alcohol. How weird is that?

I dug out our old Garmin car GPS's and got them updated. I figured they are a good back up if cell service fails. I also have a garmin hiking GPS and I will finish updating all the topo/trail/road maps on that tomorrow once a new 32gb micro SD card comes in so they will all fit on the device.

This Datrex is life raft survival food. Period. Nobody said gourmet.

Good news is it’s designed to be largely exposed to elements (not directly but your trunk is close enough to a vacuum sealed on deck at sea life raft case) AND BE STABLE OVER TIME/condition.

Are they yummy? Hell no. Are there flavors? Two I think. Medium rare Steak and loaded baked potato they ain’t.

Datrex is what you get when you’re gonna throw it in the trunk if you want to survive.

Starve or Datrex; I’m Datrex all day long.

MRE doesn’t like sun or high or low temp over time. Mountain House et all freeze dried is state of the art imo. Good tolerance to poor storage...better than MRE anyhow. Datrex is long term, “hard core.” But if you say survival AND you aren’t squared away with rotating your trunk chow, just throw some Datrex in the trunk in a 50 cal ammo can and fuggetaboutit.

Consider your requirement and then act accordingly.

There is a series of You Tube videos by a guy who tried to go 3 days eating nothing but survival rations like these. I don't recall that he did the Datrex.

Here is the 72 hour on SOS -

Where’s the one about the guy living on only Guinness for a week? Tried to prove that “Guinness is more than a beer, it’s a meal”.

You guys with the license, what are you actually doing with it? Are you just randomly signing on and talking to people far away?

I get the purpose of the emergency but for everyday value are you guys just treating it like a phone chat line?

I’m asking honestly and not knocking, just curious.

When I was active, I had radios in the vehicles. And would chat during the morning and afternoon commute.

CARA Repeater (146.175) used to have a big commute crowd, with a goodly number of shooters.

Like here in MDS, but talking instead of typing.

Last week got my first 35 gal drum filled with water and disinfected with chlorine. Today picked up a 1000 Watt power inverter to hook up to my 12 V deep cycle marine battery. Tested, worked fine.

The inverter, which sells on Amazon for $124 was clearance priced at Advance Auto for $22. Yes, $22. There's a thread on MDS with links or just go online. Picked mine up at the Harford Rd store.

Finally found some more SPAM today, other than regular and low sodium. I did leave a couple cans on the shelf.

KN95 respirator masks seem to be in good supply on eBay and Amazon, some for $0.40/mask. The KN95 rating is a Chinese standard that mimics the US N95 rating. A couple points of caution. Some masks may not have been certified KN95 but are just stamped that they are. Second, some actual KN95 masks were deemed inadequate by US agencies when tested against N95 masks (in part because the KN95 ear loop ones didn't seal well). I personally prefer 3M N95 respirators, and have a small stock of them, but see that they're still running about $4-5/mask on eBay (which is down from about $20/mask in April). Thus am thinking of supplementing this stock with some KN95 masks, and using a cloth mask on top that loops over the back of the head to improve the seal.

If you're spending a lot of time indoors in proximity to people not from your household this winter, and don't have a N95 mask supply, might want to consider shopping for some N95 or KN95 respirators in case supply becomes tight and prices rise again.

Thanks for the heads up. I just ordered (25) KN95 masks for $42 shipped.

With the 3M N95 masks, the cool flow ones with the valve last MUCH longer than the regular N95 masks

That sounds like a useful item to have. By the time I was interested in moving up from paper maps, Google maps and cellphone GPS were everywhere so like most I skipped over the dedicated GPS thing.

Can you recommend a basic but useful handheld model that supports sdcards? Cheap/used would be good because I would like to get a couple for emergencies & camping trips. Bonus points if it can recharge via usb since I have several of the external usb battery packs.
