The last two nights, while traveling I-81 to and from Roanoke, I have noticed a series of small but noticeable fires on the mountaintop just west of I-81 near mile marker 170. This is in the area of Natural Bridge and Cave Mountain Lake. Does anyone here know what is going on? Is it a wildfire or controlled burn? Is it smudge pots at an orchard? The air was pretty still on my way back last night and I could clearly smell the burning wood.

There was still burning going on last night although it seem to have move north a bit. VDOT put out signs that said it was controlled burning.
