Recently, there appears to be a change in that the site logs me out if I'm gone for a period. Is this by design? I definitely use the "Remember Me" checkbox.

You accessing the site via a mobile browser? On my android, using Chrome, it is near impossible to do a "quick search" as the mobile browser hates the search popup.
same here. I have to log in all the time now. and this is from 2 separate computers and multiple browsers. Mobile seems normal to me.

Note: Although I was already logged in and reading, it made me log in again after hitting "quote/reply". Now that's a bit excessive.

can anyone explain to me how to do the cookie removal thing from an android phone. I need it explained to me like I am a two year old since I can hardly my damn phone anyway.

That's going to be in "Internet", you'll need to clear data, then clear cache.
