So, I’ve got me a ground hog and fox issue. I don’t want to bother the neighbors too much, though a couple have stated they have no issues with me taking care of varmints or hunting on my property. I’ve been using quiets before and now. However the fox that’s showing up is sometimes out about 50-60yds away. My coop is at 35yds. So quiets are a bit of a stretch and I’d like a bit better smack down potential. Also something that’ll cycle my 10/22. I had a whistle pig I hammered with a segmented quiet, left a hell of a blood trail and disappeared under my shed. That was Monday and today I saw one in my backyard. Wife had me go out the basement door and he was obstructed, but saw me. By the time I got a clear shot he was at the edge of the fence and I am pretty sure I missed when I squeezed off a shot quickly.
I know ground hogs don’t share dens unless mating, so unless an adult took over that one’s den, I obviously didn’t kill it. Or else two happen to have dug dens under the same shed. I could have hit it twice on my first encounter, but it takes too long manually cycling the bolt on my 10/22. I have killed ground hogs with segmented quiets before.
All of them it would be nice to have a rapid follow up shot.
Soooo...I am looking at CCI segmented subsonic as well as CCI Supressor (the 45gr RNHP). Anyone have experience with them, preferably out of a semi-automatic rifle on volume? I am sure louder than quiets, but how much so? Also are they much quieter than regular SV ammunition?
I am assuming they’ll cycle my 10/22 okay. Out of maybe 60-70 quiets I’ve fired out of my 10/22 at varmints and at the range I’ve had it fully cycle my 10/22 once and cause jams twice (short stroked the bolt, but enough to try to pick up the next round).
Thanks for any thoughts you might have.
PS I am thinking I’d keep a mag of quiets and a mag of something a bit hotter depending on what the varmint is and where it presents. If the only way to nail he fox is using something a bit louder because it’s further away, it is what it is.
