OK, Im trying the powder coat game again.
I molded up 500 9mm today and ordered some HiTek Supercoat Powder to try when it gets in.

I figure I shoot more 9mm than anything else I reload and that pistol is more forgiving cause accuracy is more in the shooter than the bullet for pistols (at least when its me).
I can try 45 Colt, 308 or 8mm sometime later.

You are light years ahead of us guys who started doing it 10 years ago. We didn't have the web info that is out there now. It was mostly learn as you go and got pretty messy at times. Make sure you get an oven with a fan to give you a more uniform heat. Good luck.

what's an easy to get yet effective mesh material for the basket to bake the bullets in?
I"ll probably fold up 2-3 baskets
I had something but tossed it 3 years ago when I thinned out my stuff before the move to the new place.

Go to bed bath and beyond and in there kitchen section they have these small metal trays with screen on the bottom that work perfectly in the toaster ovens. I think the trays are made to put utensils in and set them in a drawer

Home Depot sells a roll of galvanized fence material called hardware cloth. You can get a 3 foot roll and cut and bend it into shape. You can tell by looking if the spacing is tight enough for the bullets you are making. I have no problem with .380 and 9mm on the stuff I bought.

When I do powder coat in bulk I pile the bullets on baking parchment paper on a cookie sheet. Easy cleanup.

You must pick them up individually and put them on the paper. That makes for better looking bullets but that takes more time. With the screen, all the powder drops through and you just through the screen in the oven.

When you are doing 200 bullets at a pop, you try to save time wherever you can. In the last ten years we have proven that the bullets don't have to be 100% coated to keep from leading so the process can be speeded up.

    Ok
    Convection toaster and mesh acquired
I am brining home my thermocouple probe from work to validate the oven temp to 400F

So when I start out coating I’m hoping to not ruin 5 lbs of bullets at a time so maybe I’ll coat 1lb for the first trials?

Or maybe coat 1lb but then clean off all but 10 bullets with acetone then bake those 10? Or maybe just bake 10 then decide if I need to clean them off and revisit or bake the next 10?

    First tray done
The oven came with 2 racks so I’m tying the mesh down to the removable rack to keep it flat

    HI Tek powder came in
This mixes with acetone and was pretty easy to mix and coat

Here are pics after coating and drying then the first coat baked

Not getting fully into all grooves. 2nd coat did not as well.

Any suggestions? Maybe more acetone in the mix and a longer bucket toss time?

First coat looked pretty good other than the grooves I thought

It doesn't matter if you don't coat the whole bullet, you won't get leading. Why, I probably know but forget now. However, the guy to go to about cast bullet shooting is Glen Fryxell. Between him and Ed Harris, they taught me most of what I know about cast bullet shooting. Ahh, they were good times. Here is a little bit of Glen's writings on the subject.

    1.128
    1.209
    1.225

    Thoughts?
