I don't think numbers were required until '68. Before that some of the lower priced gun makers didn't bother.

I'm going to clean it up and will search for a date code. So far, I haven't found any. Thanks for the link. From what I can see so far, it's in the 1920- 1940 range.

I asked the Lady I got it from and all she remembers is that her dad used it for hunting and kept it on the back porch for varmints in the garden. She was a young kid and was told NEVER to touch it. She's now in her mid-eighty's.

Remove the barrel and see if there are numbers hidden away inside of the receiver and under the barrel by the chamber.

Lots of old doubles were serialized this way.

Assuming you haven't done so already.

Nothing under the barrel. On the rectangular part under the barrel, there are two "5"s. It looks like under the rectangular piece, on the barrel, there is a "5" but I can't see if there is more until I disassemble it. On the inside of the forearm it's stamped "655 CV". No letters in circles so I guess there's no date code.

It's marked J.Stevens Arms Company....that marking puts it between 1915-1945. Is there a letter in a circle anywhere on the shotgun?

It is if you do it the way we did with a suspect older shotgun we got for free. We rigged a mount where we could pull the trigger via a rope from behind cover. The gun failed. Not too stupid for a couple of 18 year olds.
