For those new to MCSM meetings:

MCSM meetings are always meet in the downstairs room of American Legion Post 268, at 11225 Fern St., Wheaton MD 20902. This American Legion post is on the street that is in back of the Safeway that looks out on Georgia Avenue, in downtown Wheaton. We usually meet on the second Tuesday of the month. A map of our meeting location is at:

    www.mcsm.org/location.html

Once you have parked, please go to the side of the Post that faces its parking lot, and go in the door that has the awning over it. Ring the buzzer, and, when you are buzzed in, please jot your name in the little guest book that is just on your right. Please put "Doug Gross MCSM" in the "Sponsor" column. Then go through the food-service area, and go on through to the door at the far right corner of the pool-tables area; go down the stairs, and that's where we meet.

We hope to see you there!

Greetings - We hope you will attend the next meeting of MCSM!
    MEETING AGENDA
    ---> Tuesday, November 8th, 2005 <---
    7:00 - 9:00 PM AMERICAN LEGION POST # 268
11225 FERN ST. WHEATON, MD 20902

What a month it has been!
    - Congress finished passing Manufacturer Protection, and President Bush has signed it into law.

    - The nomination of Harriet Miers for the Supreme Court did not go as the White House planned. Whatever may or may not have been her deficits, in regard to various issues, it seemed that her views on self-defense, and the Second Amendment, were such as we would approve. When her nomination fell through, the worrying question returned: would the next nominee bode good or ill, for 2A? Very happily, it would appear that this next nominee, Samuel Alito, is even better news for gun-owners than Miers was. That is very refreshing! The cycle of news that gun-owners are much more used to would have been "First nominee, not bad for 2A, but no cigar; second nominee -- nope, now they're running scared, the second nominee is not good for us ..."

    - In Brazil, 64% of the citizens voted against gun-banning, in a national referendum. This is in no way trivial for America's gun owners, who are the ultimate targets of attempts, in other countries, to de-legitimize the ownership of the best tools for self-defense.

    - In Florida, a state that has before been an innovator of gun-friendly laws that catch on in other states, legislation has been introduced that would specifically bar attempts by officials and bureaucrats to take away the guns of law-abiding citizens during large-scale emergencies.

    1) Welcome and Pledge of Allegiance.

    2) Introduction of any new guests or prospective members (brief).

    3) 2006 Annapolis session approaching - There may be the usual, boiler-plate pre-filings of bills that the gun-banners like to have available every year, if only for sound-bite purposes, but there are no real details about what, if anything, they might genuinely make an attempt at in 2006, an election year.

    4) Gun show volunteers needed - There are two gun shows on consecutive weekends in mid-November. You can help MCSM and all gun owners AND you can visit the show for FREE. The first show is in Frederick, on November 12-13. The second show is at Prince Georges County, Showplace Arena, November 19-20. Please come out to the show to visit, but also come out to help MCSM. You can meet and greet and talk to show attendees on firearm rights and other related items. AND, when you help MCSM you can then enter as a show exhibitor staff, browse the show in your off time and often wrangle for better deals on your purchases as an exhibitor staff member. It is fun and educational to talk gun-rights at the show. Don't be shy, I and other experienced MCSM show staff can get you started and then turn you loose to have some fun. You WILL meet all kinds of folks and have all kinds of conversations. Please call me as soon as possible, to discuss the shows and the MCSM activities and to reserve your time. Thank you! Bob Culver (301) 776-4488

    5) Lessons to be learned from the events in Brazil.

    6) Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito - Why has the Brady Bunch gone ballistic? Why are they labeling him "machine-gun Sammy"?

    7) December Holiday meeting planning

    8) Maryland has second bear hunt - WTOP, the anti-gun biased local news station, actually mentioned the eight-year-old girl who bagged the first bear (this could only be an attempt by WTOP to exercise "reverse psychology"...)

    9) MCSM membership renewal season is approaching; annual dues are $20. Thank you for your support!

We hope to see you at the meeting, Tuesday, November 8th!

+++++ From Paula Miller, DC Second Amendment Sisters Coordinator

FYI - Another good opportunity to present the gun right-ers' point of view, at Mayor Tony Williams' DC Citizen Summit IV, on November 19th

"Citizen Summit IV - Lifting All Communities - Mayor Anthony A. Williams will host Citizen Summit IV on Saturday, November 19, 8 am - 4 pm, at the Washington Convention Center located at 801 Mt. Vernon Place, NW, Hall D, Washington, DC.

Mayor Williams will convene citizens, elected officials and community leaders to begin making the tough choices involved in determining the citywide policies and priorities of the District government on youth development, healthcare, employment and economic opportunity, and affordable housing. Over the past six years, Mayor Williams has engaged more than 10,000 citizens in this unique planning process. As in past years, the daylong Citizen Summit - the largest town hall meeting in the United States - will significantly influence decisions on the District's annual spending priorities and legislative initiatives."

+++++ NRA Legislative Counsel says local case may be one of the earliest to benefit from recent Gun Manufacturer Protection law

... But Christopher A. Conte, legislative counsel for the NRA Institute for Legislative Action, said he expects plaintiffs to challenge the law but is confident that it will be equal to their challenges.

"The legislature can, in civil matters in particular, expand and contract judicial oversight, autonomy and jurisdiction. I think [the courts] are going to uphold it," Conte said.

Conte said he expects the first case to file for dismissal on the basis of the new law is likely to be the defendant in District of Columbia v. Beretta U.S.A. Corp., No. 00-0000428 (D.C. Super. Ct.), because it is closest to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The district's high court, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, declined to strike down the district's strict liability statute as unconstitutional in that case in April, and the U.S. Supreme Court denied review on this issue earlier this month.
