I've been told two different things by different RSOs at the same range!
Some people are more knowledgeable about the innards of bullets and brands than others.
After being told no steel case at one other range, they started stocking it about two months later and I was allowed to shoot it. It was a really good price at the time so I also bought a case.
Sometimes the only way to know is to take it, along with a backup and see which way the wind is blowing.
I think knowledge about steel case is much better now than 5 years ago. It was the Obama scarcity that really made people educate themselves.
