Some of you will have noticed some spammers getting through the shields and making it to posting on the forum.

Upticks in spam registrations are cyclical and once we get on somebody's list, it goes on for a while and then it falls off.

I feel like the kid in the Christmas SAtory who said he had developed a keen sense of the different kinds of soap that he had to wash his mouth out with.

I've become quite a connoisseur of spammers and can pretty much tell you where they are from based on their username, email addresses and server names.

I can also pretty much tell you what behaviors they'll exhibit once they register.

The Bangladeshis and Filipinos are pretty passive and pretty much confine themselves to putting references in their profile.

The ones from Romania, Ukraine, etc are underachievers....register and go.

The current crop of Chinese and Canadians are the PITA. They register, post quickly before we can get them.

In short, just hit the report post button and we will get them.

It will all pass in a few days, unless we get hit with the DDOS attack again like last year, which was a totally different animal.

I thought I noticed a bunch of new members with what seemed like a regular name with two letters attached like Laurali or Jamespe. Maybe I'm just Internet stupid, but what do they get out of just joining and not even posting?

Yeah, I don't get spamming us. Maybe I'm just dense.

It used to be that they would put their spam links in their siglines and then disappear. We changed those settings a long time ago and it got better.

Now, they post quickly with some link to their sites. I guess there's money to be made in those clicks.

It's not targeted at "us". It happens in every online forum to some degree or another. We might get it a little worse because unlike some forums, arfcom specifically, we allow yahoo, gmail, etc accounts to be used.

Each inbound link corresponds to a higher google page ranking for search engine optimization. So if you are trying to get your Viagra pushing business higher in the search rankings, you pay one of these SEO companies (who outsource to these locations) to do all the various black hat tricks to increase your ranking. One of those tricks is to populate as many sites as possible with links to your website. This drives up the page rank and corresponding placement in the search engines.

As an admin there may be an option in the forum software to automatically include the rel="nofollow" tag to all links posted to the website. This tells google and the other search engines to not follow these links. Eventually your site will fall off the spammers radar because all of the time spent on that particular site to populate spam links is wasted.

Norton, you may have already investigated this. If not, here are some links for more information:

In the last couple weeks this has been a big issue on several forums I am on.

Thanks or keeping on top of it here. I can barely notice it compared to the other sites.

As a general rule of thumb, I NEVER EVER click on any link posted by a new member (< 20 posts, or just registered within the past couple of days).

Even if you're curious, #1 that click will probably generate them revenue, so why reward them? and #2, there's a BIG chance it will contain viruses, malware, etc.

On the trucking site I mod for we mostly get 'em from India or Finland. Those Hindu's sure are persistent.
