If you're concerned about public access to your twitter updates, you can set your account as private, and people will have to request access. You can grant/deny one request at a time.
Other significant features that makes twitter an indispensable tool are "Lists" & "saved searches". You can google around for instructions & tips on how to yes these features. You end up with your own custom news feed.
I've been on twitter for over 6 years now & use it daily. Much more frequently than Facebook, which, by the way, is also falling out of fashion with HS & college kids (or so my two kids who are those ages tell me.) so that's gotta tell you something...
