I'm interested in one of these. The 7.5 inch barrel model in either the Blackhawk or Redhawk Hunter model.

I saw on Hickock's video that the Blackhawk was hurting his finger on heavy loads but he had no trouble with the Redhawk.

Is the Blackhawk really that bad? I'd hate to buy one and not like shooting it. I've shot the Super Redhawk and it was pretty manageable for me but I like the Redhawk better.

I love my redhawk! It's accurate and very comfortable to shoot. I don't have giant hands and it still feels good.

I'm also in the market for a 7.5" Redhawk in .44 Magnum. It'll be my income tax refund toy this year.

I never quite got the hang of shooting an SA revolver but I know a lot of people who swear by them. I always preferred DA/SA revolvers. They just feel right and managing recoil is never a problem.

    It's personal.

The trigger doesn't bother me. The squareback triggergaurd on a Super Blackhawk smacks me on the finger.

    Everyone's MMV.

I did not have any painful recoil problems with my Blackhawk in .45 Colt. I shot everything from Cowboy loads to Deer Busters. With that said, when you shoot a single action properly, it won't bite you. Treat it like a semi-auto and you get dinged.

The Super Blackhawk is not that bad; it's all in how you hold it, what you feed it, and personal preference. There is also the Hunter model Super Blackhawks, available with both the longer (but rounded guard) Super frame:

and with the Bisley grip frame, better recoil control for some because it pushes straight back:

The Redhawk is an awesome gun too though, but has fewer grip options than the Super Redhawk which can use any grip made for the GP100 or SP101, not that you'd want to.

I am a long time single action shooter, love the various Blackhawks and can shoot them reasonably well, but I think the double actions have better single action triggers pulls in general and are easier to shoot well.

It all has to do with your pain tolerance.

For practice, I use 9 grains of Unique behind a 240 cast lead bullet. This is a good practice load as well as a small game/coyote killer up to 50 yards. It won't beat you up.

For serious work at long range, I use 23.5 WW296 behind a Hornady 240 XTP. You don't practice much with this load.

Gloves definitely help if they don't interfere with your grip. The square guard on the SBH seems to be the issue. I never noticed any issue with my .45 Colt BH but I never put really hot loads in it either.

I build up my tolerance to pain with 22 grains of H110 and a 300 grain chunk of lead.

    Flinch inducing.

Single action magnum pain is an acquired taste. Sorta like Scotch. The first time you get bitten kinda gets your attention. Somewhere around the fifteenth thump on the knuckle, sheer ecstasy has just about been reached, at which point you just can't wait to whack that knuckle again. Because from there on out it feels so good when you stop! :)
