Sounds like theres more to the story. I'm guessing he crossed the line when he chose to open the door and confront the suspect outside, rather than take a defensive position inside. The woman inside with drugs probably doesn't help his case either.
Possibly the guy outside claimed that he was shot at first and only returned fire to defend himself. I read another article that stated that the Marine was also charged with felony firearm possession and that a second woman was taken into custody as well.

Those don't seem to jive with a quote from the Marine's father:
"I don't know (who he is); my son doesn't know him; the owner of the home doesn't know him," says Steve.
