Allowing that a CZ97BD is being advertised by an IP for $779, how does it compare to a similarly priced 1911 in terms of accuracy, reliability and overall quality? That probably puts it price wise above the low level 1911s but well below a good chunk of the market. Last time I priced a Ruger SR1911 they were in that range.

    CZ makes a good gun

A I am sure that a Colt 1991, Springer or Ruger 1911 could be had for about that price. I'm how 1911 will have a better trigger. Used 1911s would be something to look at as well.

You could also see if you could find a used Sig p220 in that price range, although I am not sure if you would really be gaining anything by going Sig

Jim i have no hands on advice for the 97 but I’ve had two buddies who had them and ditched them because stock they wouldn’t feed hollow points and they didn’t want to send it off to be cajunized

Part of my attraction to the CZ is their ergonomics works for me. Early on I found I had to tip my wrists over awkwardly for 1911's. I don't have that problem with CZ, they just seem to point in the right direction with little effort.

I had a 97BD that I got from 2A Supplies to use in IDPA, but I was handicapped by the double action first shot. I traded it for a 97B with another member here...all legal. Trooper thought it was weird, but who cares. Anyway, you want to meet somewhere and try it...I'm not very lively in the evenings anymore. PM me if you wanna pick my brain.

J, if you want to go DA/SA then you might as well kick it “Old School”

If you’re wanting C&L then consider the 97B since that would be the closes kissing cousin to a BHP in 45 ACP if JMB had willed it.

I used to have a S&W 645...a decent pistol but a horrible trigger. I later sold it...hope the 4506 was improved in that respect.

The DA/SA .45 ACP pistols I have...Sig P220 Elite and both a H&K USP45 and USP45 compacts. All are truly excellent pistols but I still prefer the 1911 platform.

Shot a pre-Cajunized 97B a couple of years ago and was underwhelmed. Friend paid $800 + another $600 for Cajun Gun Works to do their thing to it. I haven't shot it since he had it upgraded but, he's of the same opinion as this guy:

I prefer a 1911 for both sentimental and practical reasons. It was the first handgun I really learned to shoot well. I still like them a lot. If it had been me, I'd have put $1400 into a good 1911 before buying a CZ-97 and waiting 4+ months to get it back from CGW.

I own a cajunized CZ97 BD. Out of the box, I hated it. Trigger felt inconsistent to me. Also, the barrel bushing kept backing out. I tried to sell it, but didn't want to take the loss. So, I sent it to Cajun Gun Works. They took exactly 10 weeks to complete the work and exhibited great customer service and attention to detail. They called me when the pistol was on the bench to discuss upgrade details and actually talked me out of some extra slide work I had requested. After a few range sessions with the cajunized 97, I sold my 1911s. No regrets.

So my formula is (CZ97 + Cajun)>Colt Special Combat Govt>CZ97 stock. To be honest though, I'm not a big fan of 1911s.

it's a lot more dough, but if you like 1911 ergo's and trigger and want double stack capacity, look at sti or other 2011's, awesome guns!

My experience with a 97 is 1) the damn thing was too big for my hands, 2) The trigger needed lots of work to get a reasonable double action pull and less creep on the single action pull, 3) it was picky about what it ate. I unloaded it even though a CZ 75 was my carry gun for about 10 years.

I just got a new 97B last Thursday. Took it to the range Saturday and it was flawless with 150 rounds of Freedom ammunition 230 gr HP. It shot very well for me.

In comparison, I also have a Springfield Armory TRP Operator and a Dan Wesson Specialist both in .45 ACP. Both of these 1911s are in the $1500 range. I paid less than $700 for the big CZ. I didn't have any of my 1911s last Saturday. But if I remember it correctly, I shot my CZ better than both of my 1911s.

I have small to medium hands. In DA mode, the CZ is definitely on the big side. But I am only shooting it in SA mode. I may even change the trigger to be SAO.

Some things to note about CZs:
-Trigger wears in gradually over the first thousand rounds and then is buttery love for the rest of your life. It's better to judge trigger with your friend's worn in gun. I've found broken-in 75s (originals, SP01s, P01s etc.) to have very smooth triggers for a non-1911, certainly superior to any of the polymer wonder9s out there. My 97B is no exception. It smoothed out after a few months of regular shooting.
-Get your CZs Cajunized, folks. What some of you probably already know, is that the gap between 90% of mid-range guns out there is just not that huge. The work Cajun does on a CZ takes it into the realm of $1500+ competition guns. After Cajun, my 97B ruined me for everything else at the range. My buddy's SAO Legion, my brother's non-cajun shadow2, just aren't quite there.

As far as grip size goes for a 97, the newer models with slim aluminum grips are night and day better. Is a single stack 1911 slimmer? Duh... unless you exclusively shoot single stack 9/38 it is the slimmest girl at the party. But for double stack 45, 97s are smaller than you think it is.

I got to play with some double stack 2011 STIs the other day at Rainier. Those things are fat as hell. Changed my mind about buying one. My 97 is svelte by comparison. Go to 2A or somewhere else that stocks them. Get your hands on one. Decide for yourself. I sunk another grand into mine BECAUSE it was better than any other 1911 at the sub 1k price point, and Im not a 1911 hater by any means. My next gun purchase is a nighthawk so I can finally decide if something can out shoot my cajunized CZ. :)
