It is actually a Nike missile site. It had Nike missiles, maintenance facilities and crew quarters.

I learned about them during our " duck and cover " days in school during the near nuclear fifties.

Is that what that dumbass place is in Davidsonville?

    An old missile silo?

Yes, part of the missile defense ring around DC (I think under the MAD-doctrine treaties the US and USSR were still allowed to place anti-ballistic missiles around their capitols) before the Nikes became obsolete. The county bought it from Uncle Sam for a dollar, which was probably one of the larger investments they ever made in the place.

The entrance to the "gym", about 30 feet underground where the missile was stowed on it's platform, fueled and ready for launch. Come on down and breath heavy and work up a sweat recruits, what could possibly be unhealthy down there?

I think originally there was a ring with something like 20 Nike bases surrounding DC. I think most of them were in MD. One on the Eastern Shore was at Tolchester. Kent County bought it and made it the 4H Ag Center. John Curlett uses one of the buildings for the 4H rifle program.

OMG! I could walk to that range. Add a coffee/sandwich shop, and it would be amazing!:thumbsup:

You'd wanta make the gun range smaller?

I'll put tables and chairs out under the front overhang and you can operate a food truck in the parking lot.

I'd imagine the build out alone would cost a ton. Not sure if anyone on here has chump change to throw at it but I do think location wise it would be nice. Beats driving to MSAR.

Yes, that's correct. The control center for the complex was at Fort Meade. There's also the site near the Bay Bridge that the County also acquired that's now Bay Head Park. Here's an image showing the ring around major cities in the mid-Atlantic.

The Control Center is on Broadneck Rd and is now an Army Reserve Center. I also live nearby and always wondered why Broadneck Rd meanders back in that direction and doesn't connect to anything. That answers it.

A more likely explanation is the realignment of Cape St. Claire Rd when they moved the exit to the West after the "reach the beach" campaign in the Shaeffer administration.

It cut up a couple of the roads through that area.

Looking at GoogleEarth, your thought makes sense. Broadneck Rd ends in a small turnaround just a stone's throw through the woods from the ramp connecting Cape St. Claire Rd to Rt 50 Westbound. Originally, it probably connected near Malfunction Junction. I remember the old non-limited access intersection on weekends. What a mess!!

Yes, when the stop light was over by the 7-11. I remember that from going to the beach.

Yes, when you look at Google Maps, you can see the old alignment, labeled as College Pkwy East for the southern part, and Old Cape St. Claire Rd for the northern section. There used to monster delays at the intersection with Rt. 50 whenever the light would turn red to allow traffic to turn for the fast food joints.

At the time, I was living in DE for my first professional job and would come back to visit my parents in PG County on weekends. Typically I was traveling opposite to beach traffic and would marvel at the miles long delay. The absolute worst was before they built the new Kent Narrows Bridge. Whenever they opened the bridge for boat traffic it would instantly back up the beach traffic for miles. It wasn't unusual to see 10-15 mile backups after a bridge opening.
