I picked up a Walther P1 on a trade here on MDS a couple of years ago and it has turned into one of my favorite guns to shoot. Don't think I'll ever get rid of this one!

Thanks! Historically speaking, I think the P38/P1's design ranks up there with the 1911, Browning HP and a few notable others. That's one of the reasons I admire them so much. The other reason, like you said, is because the P38 is just a joy to shoot. While the DA trigger-pull has never been anything to write home about, the SA trigger-pull is a lot of fun with its short reset and crisp break. Recoil is quite manageable. Accuracy is outstanding for a service pistol. Too bad she only holds 8 shots, huh? :D

Mine will be strictly relegated to range toy. I'm not going to shoot anything but mild 115gr FMJ loads thru it because I have several other guns much better suited for HD.

I'm with you on this! I never intend to carry my P1, and it spends most of it's life in my safe, but it sure is fun when it gets out!

This has come down through the oldest sons for a couple generations. My great uncle brought back one for each of his siblings, one being my grandfather. When my interest in shooting rekindled a couple years ago I found the P38 to be a DAO, which didn't seem right. I finally got the courage to take it apart and found the sear had sheered off. Must have been a late war production because it looked like pot metal. I replaced it (keeping the original) and have shot it just enough to give folks an appreciation of the history involved.

That's an interesting late-war (1945) Walther (AC) P38 you have there with a horizontal roll mark. Do all the serial #'s match? If so, that's definitely a nice one. There are others here who can tell you more about it than I can but that is a keeper!

    PPQ Q5 Match

Just picked it up this morning from my FFL. Ran 100 rounds through it at Freestate. Shoots like a dream. Great trigger - as good as the trigger on my P226 Elite. Doing homework on an optic for it. Very pleased with this purchase...

    Nice spread!

    From the way-back machine....

One of the very first P.38's made, a commercial Mod HP (Model Heeres Pistole) assembled at end of 1939 and delivered as part of a 1000 pistol order to the Swedish military in early 1940. It's taken a while to find one and this has the advantage of being unmolested and with unit markings (only a few hundred were marked). Plus, it's in super shape! Pics don't do it justice, the original high-polish finish is really sharp.

It has a bunch of interesting features only found on the first couple of thousand Mod HP and P38 (2nd Variation Zero series), which were quickly phased out during pre-production testing.

Now the thread has a decent reboot. That's an amazing find. Do you shoot it (in moderation), or are you trying to preserve the pristine condition?

The Swede is a safe queen (or king?).
The WW2 era P.38's have a well-earned reputation for cracking lock blocks and slides.
There are more than a few from this early contract with mis-matched blocks and slides as the Swedish armorers repaired them over time.

Still the most accurate .45 ACP straight outta the box I've ever owned.

I want a P5 and a P88 though. Shooter grade, not collector grade. They were the objects of my obsessive lust during the 1980's but could never afford either one.

The coolest Walther I ever owned was a PP Super in .380 ACP, 1 of 1000 that Interarms imported during the early 80's. Wish I could've hung-on to it because I know it's worth upwards of $3.5k now.

Anyone got a Q5 SF yet? That's kind of the direction I'm leaning for a new USPSA CO gun.

IMO, it's about $300-400 overpriced. I'd buy a CZ TSO or a custom Shadow SP-01 before I'd pay that kind of $ for a striker-fired pistol. Granted, it is RMR ready and the trigger is good but not great. Definitely not as good as a CZ's.

Having handled the two difference families of pistols, I'd agree. The PPQ is (for my large mitts) strangely chubby and unwelcoming, compared to CZ's goodies. Gave real thought to the steel frame Walther, even while deliberately pretending not to care about the price difference. Nope, the CZs just felt better! Granted, they are a little old school in some ways, but that's part of their charm, for me.

It's too bad the P88 never realized its full potential because it was an amazing pistol. It was their attempt to build a 'Wunder Nine' back in the late 80's to compete with the Sig P226, Beretta 92, etc. Unfortunately, it was overpriced as hell and epically failed the US Army's adverse conditions test while being considered as a replacement for the 1911. Walther built it to such tight tolerances that the moment it got any dirt or debris in it, it would fail to function.

Now I feel bad for talking about CZ and not giving out any Walther love. So I went into the safe, and grabbed the only Walther I own for a quick snapshot. Here's Herr PP, by way of Interarms. I've never done the homework to see what year it was made, but it's in very nice shape. Safe queen, for sure - I love giving it a once over once in a while, but not my favorite gun to shoot in my big hands. But I'm glad it's in the collection - definitely a little piece of modest history.
