Bump stock ATF comments: they know who you are

I dont know how they know although I can guess. If you submitted a comment to the ATF for bump stocks (and used your real name), the WSJ and mercury analytics will contact you and ask for input for a story. I just said no because I think my comment stands on its own.

except, obviously not!!

ETA: I am not sure I like this technology that links .gov comments to subscriber lists and essentially goes fishing for quotes.

Reading the reporters other stories, the gist of the stories seems to be many comments on .gov are fake or written by bots.

never mind that people share text over the internet and tend to cut and paste others well written work.

I told them I'd was a hard core Dem, hardly knew what bump stocks were but stongly agreed they should still be sold.

I'm one of the 35,709.

The media hasn't reached out to me yet.

I suggested they might want to stick to the regulations they already promulgated, and avoid getting in the middle of sticky politicized situations. Given their response to the Great MSI Mail-In, they hear and obey, or at least concur.

I got one of these too, have been debating on what I want to do. They already know who you are so at this point whats the harm in letting them know how you feel, but then again who knows what theyll actually do

my advice is to fill out the survey. at the end, give permission (or not) for the reporter to call. But at least submit the survey to say you are real and submitted the comment. you dont have to agree to a follow up.

This survey seems to be used by the reporter to verify that the comments are submitted by real people, not bots. The reporter evidently previously wrote a story how a lot of comments submitted to FCC were bots, or fake, or something.

I agreed to a followup, I'm curious what other questions they have. I hope others here will post up their experiences with this

Actually found my comment! Unable to find anything related to disclosure in the section I viewed.

Anyway, here's my contribution:

Quote:
Insofar as these devices have been widely sold and not serial-numbered, it would be difficult to devise a reasonable means of regulation.

Beyond that, it has been extensively documented that bump-fire can be achieved easily without the use of the device.

Despite the highly-charged and overly politicized Las Vegas incident, which to date has yet to be fully studied, documented or even examined, these devices are not generally useful, nor in common use. Aside from providing fodder for the various sides in the gun control debates, which puts the Agency in an awkward position regarding "playing politics", there seems little point in pursuing regulation regarding these items. It adds a considerable burden to the Agency with no real-world benefit.
