Does anybody know if the ejection port cover on a left handed upper is different from a standard lower? I know it flips up but not sure if the port cover rod, spring and clip are different in anyway. I’m planning on getting a Black Rain Ordnance left handed upper. I rather get a stripped upper but they do sell one with the forward assist and cover installed. I don’t like the “Let it Rain” on the cover much and would rather have a plain black one. Plus it’s a $60 plus price difference.

Kind of an off topic, but on topic question, is my understanding right that if you have a piston AR, you do not need the HBAR requirement because it fails the copycat test? If so, would a left handed AR fail it?

AFAIK, there are no delineations regarding left handed ARs not qualifying as copy cats. They are the same gun, only left handed.

That's probably a very good question (one that I wouldn't want to test). They very well may have intended to ban left handed but how the law is written - my not-a-lawyer interpretation based the upper difference, bolt and carrier differences is that since it's not interchangeable (and functioning the same), that it's not "a firearm that is any of the following specific assault weapons or their copies, regardless of which company produced and manufactured that assault weapon" per § 5-101 - and therefore it may not need to be a HBAR. I'm sure there will be dozens of opinions for and against - but that's the issue, the law is unclear. If you browse the MSP site and review the various rulings in what they deem "not a copy", that would seemingly support.

Get one of the strike industry dust covers. They can be intalled without taking anything apart

If your dust cover or spring has problems you will have to remove the barrel to swap/repair the dust cover.

Thanks Chad. I tried both before installing the barrel. I was having problems with a regular dust cover as the rod wouldn’t allow my new Midwest Industries Combat Handguard to butt up tight against the upper. The Strike Industries one worked like a charm. It was really simple to install plus like you said if I had a problem I don’t have to disassemble everything. You are the man!
