Bummed move from VA

Hey folks -

I shouldn't say bummed. I'm moving for family reasons - reasons I don't want to go into but that are necessary to help us move forward with starting a family and the hellish gun issues in MD pale in comparison to the excitement I have about those prospects. The reality is that guns, target shooting, building, tinkering, it's such a small hobby of mine; I admittedly don't live and breath this stuff daily. Seeing the crap I'm facing in MD however definitely gives me more of a respect for what I maybe took for granted in PA and VA, but I've made my peace with it for now.

That said, I've conceded to transferring my beloved (and thrashed) PSA-15 to a family member in PA. I know I have HBAR options, piston options, but the gun will stay in the family, where it can live out the rest of it's life in a free state, so I'm ready to move on. I've been thinning out the herd lately so thankfully everything else I can hang onto.

Anyway I haven't moved yet so have a unique opportunity to buy while still a VA resident. The question I have for you folks is what would you suggest I buy before I move to (eventually) end up with a compliant AR pistol (which I'm leaning toward) or rifle in the future? Should I just go ahead and find a length-compliant AR pistol now? Better off buying a yet-to-be-used stripped lower? Buy some 80s? What pathway offers the least complications/registrations/legal gray areas to owning or building once I'm officially a resident?

Thanks for reading; glad I found this resource (forum!)

There is no length-requirement for AR pistols, only for rifles and SBRs.

Welcome. Buy a ton of magazines and any pistols you might want.

You can't buy any rifles that would be banned in MD. And any of those which are allowed are easy to get. Pistols require a HQL. Magazines are easily obtained, but you might as well just have 50 of them shipped to your house while you still can.

First priority - Normal capacity magazines .

Second priority- Virgin Lowers , but Not assembled into Pistol until after Md Resident .

No advantage either way for complete Compliant Rifle before or after move .

Be sure you need to get rid of your rifle . If you owned the PSA rifle before October 2013 you can keep it

Thanks all for the kind words. I definitely held onto my normal cap mags, and am eyeing up some hg's I likely won't be able to get down the road. Unfortunately I didn't have time to get my CCP in VA as my stay was short, so I'm stuck with a prescribed one-a-month limitation. In hindsight... sounds like I might need to pick up a brace sooner than later too, on the chance I'll still actually be able to use it in 60-90 days (insert eye roll here)
