Apparently Sen Grassley's pressure has gotten AG Holder off his butt.

CCRKBA Lauds Holder Decision to ‘Follow Our Suggestion’

    March 04, 2011 03:43 PM Eastern Time
BELLEVUE, Wash.--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today that Attorney General Eric Holder’s call for the Justice Department’s inspector general to examine the “Project Gunrunner” scandal is “exactly what we called on him to do more than a week ago.
Holder announced Thursday night – following a second expose by CBS News on the a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives operation in Phoenix dubbed “Fast and Furious” that is part of the agency’s broader “Project Gunrunner” effort – that he was asking the Inspector General to look into allegations that the operation deliberately allowed hundreds of guns to be transported to Mexico. That decision was followed by a second announcement by ATF Acting Director Kenneth Melson that he will assemble a panel of law enforcement professionals to review the agency’s strategies.
“Evidently,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb, “Mr. Holder acted on our advice. This scandal screams for an investigation, and Sen. Charles Grassley should not be out there on his own probing this scandal.”
CCRKBA issued a statement on Feb. 24 that called on Holder to either investigate the Gunrunner controversy or step down. CCRKBA also urged its members to contact their senators and congressional representatives, demanding oversight hearings on the ATF’s handling of this operation.
“Guns allowed into the illicit pipeline by the ‘Fast and Furious’ operation were involved in the death of Border Patrol agent Brian Terry and countless other crimes in Mexico and the United States,” Gottlieb added. “Reports by CBS, the Los Angeles Times and other news agencies point to an operation that got out of control in a hurry. The people responsible for this mess should be fired.
“Because of the CBS revelations last night,” he said, “we are renewing our call for American gun owners to contact Capitol Hill and ask why the appropriate House and Senate committees are not already investigating this debacle.”

I like how CCRKBA takes credit. As much as I love the SAF, their lobbying arm is a bit loony at times. Kinda like how the NRA judicial arm is also a bit loony.

Mexico: Why can't you VETO the 2nd ammendment ?

From HotAir.com: Obama: I believe in the 2nd Amendment

This HAD to be a plant ? Nobody is stupid enough to ask this as a legitimate question. Obamarx is notorious for planting softball questions like this so he can pontificate on a topic.

More details about Agent Dodson and the ATF case named “Fast and Furious.”

Read the comments ... LOTS of reference links to the Gunwalker scandal.

    Things are heating up.

This morning, "The Question" was put to the White House press secretary, who pleaded ignorance.

In other news, the firearm used to kill the ICE SA in Mexico, came from a shop in Lancaster, TX... Read the affidavit for arrest, here.

That affidavit for the arrest warrant is damning in what it doesn't say.

On Nov. 9, 2010, 40 firearms were "seized" by the ATF (Paragraph 8). Yet on Feb. 15, 2011, SA Jaime Zapata was murdered with one of those "seized" firearms (paragraph 9)....

    OH boy!

Actually, the firearm used to kill Zapata was purchased October 10th and not part of this lot (or so it seems from the affidavit). The 40 firearms that were seized appear to be a different lot of guns, but that they can all be linked to the same two brothers who are traffickers.

This seems to connect the traffickers to the gun that killed SA Zapata in Mexico, but we still need to see a link that says the ATF allowed these traffickers to "walk" the guns used to kill Zapata from the USA to Mexico.

Al is right - there is something between the lines. The affidavit is talking about a fairly routine operation where the ATF & DEA uses a CI to purchase, track and then seize 40 firearms before they get over the border. But out of nowhere, the affidavit suddenly mentions that the same traffickers were responsible for moving the exact Draco into Mexico that killed the special agent.

I suppose the information is nice to know, but it does not seem especially germane to the operation. It could be there simply to warn the system that these guys deserve special recognition for their deeds, or it could be an attempt to document half a link (or both).

The other half of this story is maybe on the ATF side: did they allow the traffickers to purchase the Draco in question and then hand it off for shipment? Was that Draco one of the "walked" guns? Was the ATF "Fast and Furious" Group VII aware of the brothers who "specialized" in trafficking Draco guns?

If so, ATF has now put at least two guns on the street used in the murder of US LEOs.

Nice to see "the question" being asked at a White House Press Briefing, even if they are largely useless endeavors. You ever listen to one? Nothing is said. At all. One hour of useless stammering. But the upshot is that reporters use that time to show off how smart they are (to each other). They hate being upstaged and hopefully the question will cause some to start digging a little more.

Documents point to ATF "gun running" since 2008

This might be a dupe post, but linking the ongoing scandal to 2008 (aka "Wide Receiver") is worth mentioning again.

(CBS News) A controversial operation in which U.S. agents were allegedly ordered not to intervene as American guns flowed to Mexican gangs may have been going on for many years, reports CBS News investigative correspondent Sharyl Attkisson.

Fox News finally did a 3 minute segment on this this morning on Fox and Friends.. 3 minutes for any news segment is noteworthy. I think some news folks have awakened and this is getting bigger.

It keeps getting better, now the Mexican politicians want an explanation their payoff.

    Fixed that for you.

The article says they want to set up a working group to talk it all over. Wow. That's real action, right there. It's a warning shot: pay up or we'll be loud and make your election a mess. Sorry to sound so cynical, but I find it hard to believe any group of politicians anywhere - especially Mexico - are capable of honestly approaching an incident like this without asking "what's in it for me?"

Prediction: vastly increased US funding for Mexican "community intervention programs" run by local politicians and their friends.

Hush money: it's not just for mistresses anymore.

Yesterday Grassley, having lost confidence in the acting DOJ Inspector General (IG) to conduct a fair investigation, is asking the Holder-assigned IG to step aside.

    http://grassley.senate.gov/about/up...sk-for-DOJ-IG-to-be-removed-from-ATF-case.pdf

A direct argument that pulls no punches. Grassley is explicitly calling the people at ATF and Justice liars. He wants the investigation to include their misleading and false statements.

Q: What is the #1 thing that puts government people in jail in Washington?

    A: It ain't the crime; it's the cover-up.
