On the very first stage of last Sunday's C&R 2 gun match at AGC, Katie's M1 carbine jammed closed on about the third round. She couldn't force it open, so after a few wasted seconds, she safely abandoned it in the dump box and, took a bunch of FTE's and went to work with her pistol. When it was time to clear the rifle, I snatched the bolt open and was rewarded with a (much larger and more widespread than expected) shower of unburned powder. I took it over to the safe table and tapped out the bullet that was just barely held by the rifling. Fortunately, I had taken a pretty good mental picture of where the offending casing went and was able to find it. In addition to the fact that there were not many pieces of .30 carbine brass laying around, it was pretty obvious which one was the culprit:

These were factory (Arsmscor) rounds that the rifle had previously really liked, in both reliability and accuracy?

    What happened?

    :tap:

There is another pic that clearly illustrates the problem. It would be fun to take guesses and build suspense and tease every one (because it's something I've never seen and never would have guessed). I'll put that pic as the first comment, so you can speculate without seeing the punchline:

I've been shooting and handloading for over forty years and have never saw anything like that. When new brass cases are made the flash hole is usually punched in. More higher priced brass like Lapau and Nosler drill the flash hole. I have had brass with off center flash holes but never missing the flash hole.

Well, that's a first for me. I've seen plenty of undersized, oversized, and off center. But I've never once seen a missing flash hole.

You may want to consider making Armscor aware of this story. It could help them and other shooters both. Definitely include the lot number off the box if you have it. They may send you something to compensate for your time and trouble, and I hope they do. In any event, they ideally should know about it.

Hell, I have been reloading since I was 10, in the early sixties, and have never seen anything like that. I would write to them, with a picture and ask for a box of ammo since Katie lost the match. :D

I would expect an ammo manufacturer to be heavily vested in digital image inspection and I guess not armscore.

Yep, no flash hole. Had that happen on the Glock 18, jammed that thing up pretty tight. We were shooting Silver Bear 9mm at the time.

Yes, me too, over 50 years, that's a first. Maybe their flash hole punch broke. I wonder how many slipped by.
    Cool picture, thanks.

Really wild!! You would think the flash hole is made when the shell is pressed. I would definitely let them know. Curious if there are any others in the lot that are like that.

I had this with some Hornady 6.8SPC factory ammo some years back, primer popped but no bang. Called Hornady and was told that some of their brass was outsourced and they had no control over QC. Needless to say I was not to happy with where the pressure of the primer going the wrong way in my rifle.

Had a guy in class with this same issue but iirc it was hornady grendel brass. Same BS from the idiots at hornady too. I wrote them off after two very sour experiences dealing with their so called tech people. I suggested to the gentleman that he make it a weekly habit of smearing pictures of the issue on at least one board til they changed their minds.

I've seen this issue a few times. The only thing that makes sense to me is the punch die breaks and not all the cases that were not punched are culled from the production line during the cleanup and retool operation. Fwiw, I have never seen this in any case that has drilled flash holes, only punched. This is partially responsible for my conclusion on how the failure occurs.
