    1. HELP NEEDED: Lobby Day team leaders needed

We still need some additional team leaders for Lobby Day to distribute VCDL materials at assigned legislators’ offices.

If you are a VCDL member and are interested in being a team leader, reach out to Kristi Horton at teamleads@vcdl.org.

There will be a team-lead meeting (dial-in and videoconference options) at 8:30PM Tuesday evening, January 11. The meeting will include a brief orientation for new team leaders, as well as "what's different this year" for experienced team leaders. Kristi will give you the connection information for the videoconference once she gets your email.

    2. Lobby Day buses still have room! Let’s fill them up. Reservation information

Buses are scheduled from Roanoke, Leesburg, Fairfax County, and Norfolk currently. The Fairfax bus will pick up in Fredericksburg, unless it is too full. In that case another bus will be added coming from Fredericksburg.

Buses will cost $40 round trip ($44.06 after taxes and fees). We've once again kept it at cost. If you want to ride a bus and cannot afford the fare, advise bus@vcdl.org. We'd rather have you there and will do our best to subsidize your fare.

    3. Gun bills so far

Gun bills are pouring in now and will continue for days. As of writing this alert on Monday, January 10, (and this WILL change), there are 10 bills that VCDL supports and 1 that it opposes.

    SUPPORT

HB 10, Delegate Anderson, removes all fees for a person to get a concealed handgun permit (CHP).

HB 11, Delegate Anderson, reduces the penalties for carrying a concealed handgun without a CHP.

HB 14, Delegate Anderson, repeals Virginia’s One Handgun a Month arbitrary gun-rationing scheme.

HB 23, Delegate Walker, repeals the ban on the carrying of firearms in a church “without good and sufficient reason.”

HB 26, Delegate Anderson, repeals the authority for localities to have an ordinance banning firearms in local government buildings, parks, recreation and community centers, and at events that are permitted, or should have been permitted.

SB 74, Senator Chase, repeals the authority for localities to have an ordinance banning firearms in local government buildings, parks, recreation and community centers, and at events that are permitted, or should have been permitted.

SB 75, Senator Chase, repeals the prohibition on the otherwise lawful carrying of firearms in the Capitol, General Assembly Building, Capitol Square, and property that is owned or leased by the Commonwealth, such as rest stops, DMV, and ABC stores.

HB 124, Delegate Wyatt, allows .22 caliber centerfire cartridges to be used to hunt deer when used in a rifle. Other states have this same hunting provision.

HB 133, Delegate Cherry, repeals the prohibition of firearms on preschool and child day center property, both public and private, that was passed into law in 2020.

HB 188, Delegate McGuire, repeals the ban on the carrying of firearms in a church “without good and sufficient reason.”

    OPPOSE

SB 61, Senator Hackworth, exempts retired or active Commonwealth Attorneys, Assistant Commonwealth Attorneys, and judges or justices of the Commonwealth from gun laws that better-trained concealed handgun permit holders are not exempted from, including local-government gun prohibitions, the Capitol Square and state agency gun prohibition (rest stops, General Assembly Building, DMV, ABC, etc.), the prohibition against loaded rifles or shotguns in a vehicle, guns in non-secure areas of airport terminals, on school property, and the prohibition against carry within 40 feet of a polling place. Innocent lives are equally valuable, so we should be able to protect those lives in the same locations, regardless of our current or previous career choices.
