Others include the Bushnell Elite Tactical 6-24x50. You need around 24x at 1000y and some use 30x in zoom scopes. And it needs to be 50mm or larger not 44mm which is too dim in my book since I have a Vortex 6.5-20x44 on my 6.8, which I limit to around 800y or less.

In/around your price range and available distance, I'd probably go Nightforce SHV F1 4-14x.

I run a Razor 4.5-27x on my RPR to get out to 1k. It gets shot around 22-24x and occasionally as low as 15x if mirage is bad.

Viper PST 6-24 FFP is the exact scope that will go on the RPR 6.5 CM that I bought a couple of months ago. I just need money for the scope now lol

Realistically you're not going to shoot over 16x but the higher mag def helps with wind and ranging if you're using the scope for that. i started with the 10x SWFA before i spent money on the Razor 4.5-27 just to make sure I wanted to play that game. And how often are you really gonna shoot over 5-600 yrds?

I have the Vortex pst 6-24. It's a nice scope but if I were doing it again I'd take the XTRII 5-25.

I run the Vortex Viper PST 6-24x on my .308 precision rifle. It works well from 100 to 1200 yards.

TRhe 6-24 reportedly has much better glass than the 4-16x goes.

Personal preference really. I use an XTR-II in 5-25. I sold my Viper because the zero stop drove me insane. The XTR-II comes 20MOA built in below optical center so you'll need to adjust your zero stop if you max early. We managed to shoot the RPR in 6.5 to a mile with an XTR-II and a PEPR mount (additional 20MOA).

Is the illuminated reticle on the Vortex worth the extra $100?
I assume you're considering an HS-T? It's not just the illuminated reticle that makes a PS-T better, you want a PS-T that's first focal plane (ffp). These run about $950.

Not to thread jack, but a related question.
24-30x seem to be highly recommended. My LGS made me a deal on a Leopold 6.5-20 Mark 4 ER/T he had in stock. Did I short myself on magnification?

I would say you did not. 20 - 24 is not a huge step.

My things are, First Focal Plane, reticle matches the turrets (mil/mil or MOA/MOA), reticle design, repeatable adjustments (turn up 10 clicks and back down 10 clicks, the rifle shoots to the same point of impact).

Beyond initial sight in (and probably load development if you roll your own) I don't bring the Ruger out unless I'm shooting 500+.
