I find myself having to take my personal vehicle into DC today and was wondering if I need to remove my ammo stash from my truck, or is it ok now that the gun laws have changed? No guns, just ammo. I always keep extra in case I get to the range and forget to pack boolitz.
    Thanks

Remove all the ammo from your vehicle and your person.

Just like with a firearm, the District of Columbia requires that an individual registers their ammunition. When a person is driving in DC with ammunition that has not been registered, they can be charged with the unlawful possession of ammunition, which has the same penalties as the misdemeanor unlawful possession of a firearm.

Does that apply to driving thru as well? As in coming from MD dropping a family member off at a metro inside DC then traveling thru to Virginia?

Yes. You're either in DC or you're not.
If you're in DC, you are subject to their laws.

Please note that since guns and ammunition are largely outlawed in DC, it is therefore an extraordinary safe place.

Concur... no ammo or ammo components (i.e. fired brass) in DC if you aren't registered.

Be aware, there is a tiny spit of the beltway right around the Woodrow Wilson bridge where you actually cross into DC for a very short distance... if you get nabbed in that area, you will have a bad day.

    Good luck.

I believe that you have to have a registered firearm in DC to be OK to possess any ammo, and then only for that caliber weapon. So if you have a registered .357 only your .357 ammo is considered registered, and if they stop you with a loose .22, it is still the same outcome.

Thanks for the replies. I wasn't sure if that changed with the new firearm regulations.

Not quite. The regs were changed. If you have a registered firearm in DC, you can possess any ammo. If you don't have a registered firearm, no ammo or components (shell casing) may be in your possession.

That portion of 95 is patrolled by VA and MD, not DC. DC patrols the water under the bridge. It's a very small portion. Less than a half mile. I doubt you'd be cited. But IANAL

But a portion of the GW PW on Columbia Island is in DC. It is patrolled by USPP but if you were stopped there, you could be cited for violation of DC statute.

Except prohibited ammo types are never allowed

yeah, but may not be prohibited elsewhere... kind of like 10+ round mags.

they may be ok at home (state), but they'll nail you here.
