Via Wikipedia...Barry was charged with three felony counts of perjury, 10 counts of misdemeanor drug possession, and one misdemeanor count of conspiracy to possess cocaine...served 6 months in VA and PA

Yup. And only convicted on one count of misdemeanor drug possession. Pitiful. :sad20: I'd say "criminal" but apparently that has a different meaning for some folks in DC.

If they earned it honestly, so do I.

The only "dishonest" thing in the asian community, mostly Korean is the "Money Game". lets say its a $10000 pool, you pay in $500 and 6 months latter you get $3000. If you are in the "game" you can take loans from it to open a business or finance business upgrades, thing is you have to pay 25% interest, so iff you borrow $1000 you have a week to pay back $1250, if you do not pay back in week the interest compounds. I can only imagine what happens if you do not pay back ever. Most people i knew just did the "game" as an investment thing none that I knew actually borrowed money.

Edit: Anybody know what the deal is with the white bandanas? Just a smart and simple way to identify friendlies if a firefight broke out or is there some deeper meaning?

To channel strength and courage, silly!:D

"We got to do something about these Asians coming in and opening up businesses and dirty shops...they ought to go. I’m going to say that right now..."
    - Marion Barry

Frankly I think DC should do something about all the ignorant crackhead voters electing the same ignorant crackhead politicians decade after decade after decade, but that's just me.
Back in 1992 in Los Angeles the crackheads tried to "do something about Asians", it didn't work out too well for them....

What possible use could these assault weapons have...there's no sporting use so they should be banned. :sarcasm: Ummm yeah. Tell that to the guys on the roof. Bill Clinton wanted to control guns except for "sporting purposes".

    Bill Clinton 1993:
"It makes the point I've been making all along -- that it doesn't have anything to do with hunting," he said. "My policies don't have anything to do with hunting."

Not to quibble about this scum bag, but he was only convicted of one misdemeanor possession charge by his "peers", apparently the same "peers" that continued to vote him into office. As has already been stated, DC deserves what they get from people like him. I just feel sorry for all the sensible, law-abiding, decent DC residents who have to live with a majority voting block that votes and jury nullifies like they did in this case.

Well, as Eric Holder said back a few years ago, they just want 'what they're entitled to'......... :sad20:

    Classic Marion Barry.

    Or my personal favorite:

If the Asians didn't open shops in those neighborhoods where would the people shop? They apparently are the only ones brave enough to do it.

First, I would like to state for the record I am in no way defending Barry nor am I one of his supporters.

With that statement out the way, I know what Barry meant to say - but my God did he say it in wrong way and using the wrong words.

I grew up in a Ward 8 type environment; Ft. Greene, Brooklyn circa 1980 during the tail end of the heron and heights of crack wars. We had a similar problem with the Spanish bodegas and Korean Grocers.

Let me expand on Mayor Slick Back's myopic comments ...

Not to make sweeping generalizations, but by and large these stores offer sub-standard and low quality and or nutritional value goods in their stores yet charge exploitative prices, knowingly, due to the general lack of access to better goods and stores or sparse availability of them. Not that I would expect anyone here to travel through Ward 8, but it's not as if you're going to find a Fresh Fields/Whole Foods/Harris Teeter and you'll find your typical brand supermarket has lesser variety. Add to this they tend to pepper the community with a plethora of liquor stores and "fried food" spots (Aka: Sh*t Shacks as I call them).

The second and teritiary issues are that they rarely re-invest in the community. Most local - small business will seek to endear themselves to the community and root themselves in a number of different ways. The foreign own businesses only siphon money out of the community and are reluctant to hire from the community except for the most menial positions.

However, this is not a problem isolated to small business. There's a large office complex construction project currently underway in SE DC - I forget who has the contract and what new Federal HQ is being built, but the General contractor is private. This is one of the first (and few) large construction jobs to happen across the Anacostia in almost 20 years. Hundreds of local (i.e. they live in the ward) out of work licensed contractors and experienced tradesmen went to the site to look for work.

General contractor says, in so many words, "Sorry guys, no jobs here to be had." However, the residents noticed more and more new workers showing up with VA and MD license plates on their cars & trucks. The site started being picketed and the contractor began pushing them off a corporate office to fill out applications.

Eventually, it came to light that the general contractor was lying - there were positions to be filled but they were only advertising in VA & MD and essentially purposely ignoring Ward 8, which the residents felt was a slap in the face considering the project was going up in their backyard.

Finally, there's the issue of the general cleanliness and treatment of the customers. Respect and treatment is a two way street of course.

Lol! Apparently you're not aware that the Koreans have essentially put a stranglehold on the sourcing and distribution side of many businesses that cater to the black community and frankly, will not sell, or pair down their offer sheets to anyone other than Korean owned stores.

This practice is completely illegal, with elements of collusion and anti-competitive behavior - but neither the DOJ or the FTC has saw fit to investigate and break-up supply chain.

So it's not necessary a factor of "opening the business" - it's where do you find a stable and consistent supply chain and distributor? Without distro and a strong supply chain with competitive pricing you will be a severe economic and competitive disadvantage.

...sorry for the long winded response, but I felt it would be fair to shine a light on the problem in a more articulate and less inciting manner.

The way to get anyone to invest in your community, or hire you, is to offer skills and attitudes that employers are willing to pay for.

The residents of Ward 8 are free to open their own shop, hire whomever they like, and sell whatever food they like. Laughable as I work in places like this occasionally and most there are not interested in finding work as evident by their appearance, demeanor, and attitude in gemeral.
