Took my family to the Frederick Fair this evening. We saw chickens and ducks and cows and pigs ... and witnessed about a dozen black youths (late teens) beating the snot out of another three black youths. Lots of fists and feet. I called "red" and grabbed one kid, my wife was already grabbing the other. No other dialog was necessary - we exited, stage left, with prejudice. Surprisingly, we had to shove our way through groups of gawkers ... as if a substantial beat-down was just another part of the evening's entertainment.
Fair staff arrived first, then Sherriff's Deputies. Things settled, briefly. Then a half-dozen deputies went running down the back road toward the Ferris Wheel, followed by a half-dozen hipsters with iPhones extended in a video recording salute. Kinda bizarre, that.
At least one upstanding pillar of the community was lead off in handcuffs .. with three of his posse trailing about 20 feet behind the police escort.
Wife and I did a debrief when we got home. I asked if I actually called "red," or did I just think I did (adrenaline has a tendency to blur memories.) She said I did, and that she heard me, but was already in-motion by the time I did. We were both on the same page regarding necessary action. And that's a good thing.
Thankfully, we managed to dodge being involved, and our kids were reasonably oblivious as to why mommy and daddy hustled them through the muddy patch behind the Tornado ride. So it was still a fun evening for the kids.
