Took my family to the Frederick Fair this evening. We saw chickens and ducks and cows and pigs ... and witnessed about a dozen black youths (late teens) beating the snot out of another three black youths. Lots of fists and feet. I called "red" and grabbed one kid, my wife was already grabbing the other. No other dialog was necessary - we exited, stage left, with prejudice. Surprisingly, we had to shove our way through groups of gawkers ... as if a substantial beat-down was just another part of the evening's entertainment.

Fair staff arrived first, then Sherriff's Deputies. Things settled, briefly. Then a half-dozen deputies went running down the back road toward the Ferris Wheel, followed by a half-dozen hipsters with iPhones extended in a video recording salute. Kinda bizarre, that.

At least one upstanding pillar of the community was lead off in handcuffs .. with three of his posse trailing about 20 feet behind the police escort.

Wife and I did a debrief when we got home. I asked if I actually called "red," or did I just think I did (adrenaline has a tendency to blur memories.) She said I did, and that she heard me, but was already in-motion by the time I did. We were both on the same page regarding necessary action. And that's a good thing.

Thankfully, we managed to dodge being involved, and our kids were reasonably oblivious as to why mommy and daddy hustled them through the muddy patch behind the Tornado ride. So it was still a fun evening for the kids.

Sad. Frederick used to be a nice place. I was actually in Downtown Frederick last night. There was a group of 7-10 black teens we saw twice walking around Carroll Creek leering at people. While they weren't causing any trouble that I saw; they were giving off a rather hostile vibe; starring people down as they went past. One with his shirt off, others with their pants hanging down.

We went to the fair the other day, I hate that place, but the kids like it. I refer to it as an open air Wal Mart.

Can you give us some insight on yelling red. It may be something I incorporate with our family.

Sorry to hear you had to experience that.

But, it's a good thing you and your family remain alert, and have the clear thought to call the alert and GTFO.

We have an alert for in the home, but really hadn't considered it for outside, since it's usually just us and already try to stay out of questionable places.

:sad20: Your wife and yourself did a very honorable thing probably saving some teenagers from a serious beat down. I would have done the same regardless of who. I remember growing up in PA during the early 7o's the same crap would occur every year at the Allentown Fair only it was white teenagers. I was once a teenager and did stupid crap but never to that extent. I guess we all mature at different times some earlier then others and our home schooling was better as well

Use the traffic light colors to start a statement. It's an odd thing to do, and tends to break whatever context you are currently in. The colors indicate immediacy. You, your spouse, and your family members have to all agree on what the attention words are going to be. If you don't, it just degenerates into a discussion about "why did you say that? what's going on?" and generally defeats the purpose.

My wife objects to the need for this on philisophical grounds (i.e. "it *shouldn't* be necessary.") But it is.

This is a great idea. My wife really doesn't like to be told what to do without understanding why, from me or anyone. Although I admire her brain and independence I worry if a situation were imminent she would be asking why.

I've told her about the Jeff Cooper red, orange, yellow and white color codes. A few times we have been out and I would quietly tell her not to look but that there was either someone behind us, ahead, or that we needed to cross the street immediately. She would of course look up and ask why I thought that.

I like this idea, sounds like something i will start.

When i was first married my wife was the same way. I say we need to do something NOW, and it was follwed by "why". We now have complete trust in what each other think and can get details later if needed

Yeah, at first when he said he grabbed one kid and the Mrs grabbed the other, I thought he meant they grabbed the animals that were fighting. I was thinking, "That's one badass woman!".

Sorry for the confusion - we grabbed our kids and removed them from harm's way. The fight started about 10 feet in front of us, and escalated very rapidly. Immediate priority was "get off the X."

The Tide is rolling through Maryland at an accelerated rate now. Consider an exit plan within the next ten years , if not five years sooner.

A friend of mine worked at the hospital Saturday night. At breakfast on Sunday I heard the report about the that nights work, the Carnies, the Rubes, the alcohol and heroin overdoses, the stabbings and the incidents that spilled into the downtown after the crowds were kicked off the fairgrounds.

I wouldn't go to the fair after dark if you paid me, and I sure as hell wouldn't touch any Carnie prepared food.

On another note, most all of Frederick had 10-30 minute average police response times because all the Deputies and the SAT/Pace teams were at the fair to deal with the gang violence that everyone knew was inevitable.
